Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag (116) 299

Review for classic messenger

Price was $26.94 - $167.12. This is my first timbuk2 bag and overall i have to say i am quite impressed, but not without some room for improvement. As a first time timbuk2 bag owner, i am reviewing this mostly on its own terms, less so by comparing to the 2013 version. I ordered the extra small to use during my next trip to europe. (if you order the xs it comes with a funny tag inside saying "xs - itsy bitsy teeny weeny. A nice touch! ) xs is a good size for me since i will be going into a lot of museums where larger bags are not allowed inside. . Pros:. Sturdy, yet very light material. Shoulder pad is quite comfortable (not yet tested with heavy items inside the bag). Fabric doesn't look like it will pick up dust too easily (i once ordered the bold berry color but returned it because with the dark color, i can see the dust that the fabric picks up very easily - which makes the bag looks old really quickly). So the color of the bag will slightly affect how it wears out with usage and time. Quite roomy interior for xs (expands up to 6" in depth). Interior water resistant material (bad through some heavy rain and the content inside remains nice and dry). Red stitchings in this color variants (carbon full-cycle twill) is a great touch! . . Small gripes:. Loud velcro (easily solved by purchasing a velcro silencer from timbuk2). No zipper for main compartment (i'm always a bit paranoid of stuff pouring out when opening the bag out on the street). Stitching works are not the 'cleanest job' for the bag i received. The color of this version does not exactly match the product image (see image). The gray is somewhat darker with a some tints of yellow. I did not mind this but would prefer if the image on the website matches the product. Cam buckle is only useful if you wear the shoulder strap on your left shoulder. I wear on my right so i can't really make use of it. Great feature nevertheless. . Major cons:. 2 front buckles are very difficult to operate with one hand since its hidden beneath the flap. Lack of features offered compared to size s or larger such as napoleon pocket, compression straps, etc. Water bottle mesh is sized with the size of the bag so xs means. You can only put in a water bottle with a diameter no more than 1-2 inches. Real bummer if you really want to put a reusable water bottle in there with at least 2. 5 or 3 inches. Also, the water bottle holder would be more useful if it's located outside the bag. The strap release buckle keeps 'releasing' itself. It is a handy feature but could be improved. . Overall:. I'm still satisfied with my purchase for the price i got it for despite a longer list of cons than pros. The shipping was fast for the free standard shipping i chose (the bag came in 2 days after i ordered). I hope everyone finds this review useful before making their purchase.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag Review (116)

Bag is great. It fits on your back like a backpack or at your side. The size adjuster is awesome and very easy to get a great fit very fast. It's roomy and very high quality. Durable and waterproof. It also looks sleek without having a buckle on your chest or other metal embellishments. I have the medium classic and it fits great across my back from shoulder to hip. -V. Guest

I am new to messenger style bags. This is very comfortable and has a decent amount of room for your day to day use. I don't think it would work as an over night or weekend bag, but at that point just get a small roller bag or back pack. The quality and style of this bag is right on piont.

The new version is simpler and lighter, especially the removal of the cam buckle which was a great idea but too bulky. The only con is the cross strap the previous one with the loop was easier to put it. The 2 inside side pocket are well welcomed. . Anyway, timbuk2, great material, great crafting, great bag."

The F.A.Q. for timbuk2 classic messenger bag

Fantastic bag - took it to europe and was able to carry everything i needed while keeping valuables safe from prying hands. Napoleon pocket is a great way to keep items secure and zippered but still accessible. I do agree with some other reviews that would be nice to have a water bottle holder on the outside, but in all a great purchase.

A number of questions have been asked here.

(0) Question: Does the xs bag fit a 13 inch mac book pro?

(1) Question: Just how waterproof is the carbon full-cycle twill? i would need it to survive a boston winter.

(2) Question: What size bag is in the video?

(3) Question: Are all the bags that are ordered set for right-handed people, or is there a way to choose left-handed?

(4) Question: Why doesn't the diablo (red) bag have compression straps that go all the way around the bottom like the others do? look at the pics.

(5) Question: I've seen comments on the small size indicating that it's too small for tall men. i'm 6'3, and was wondering if the medium size would work for me.

(6) Question: Can it hold a 17" laptop?

(7) Question: Wil a medium fit a 15. 6 " laptop?

(8) Question: If this is made of polyester now, how come my new one has a "cordura" tag on it? isn't cordura nylon? this looks just like my old one.

(note) Question: where/how to get Timbuk2 (manufacturer's brand) accessories & similiar Timbuk2's products

I ordered a medium size bag and have been using it for about a month or so. The build quality is fine. The bag is light, water-resistant, can handle heavy contents well without feeling too uncomfortable, and can fit lots of stuffs. The adjustable cam buckle is easy to use once i got used to it. You should shorten the strap a bit if you're not a large person (i'm 5' 10") because the bag tends to slide off your bag while riding on a bike. I use the napoleon side pocket for my kindle e-reader, which is quite convenient. . I used the bag to carry:. - a 15" laptop, a pair of size 10. 5 training shoes, some textbooks and notebooks, 2 small plastic water bottles. - a pair of size 9 hockey skates, 2 small plastic water bottles, socks, pant, etc. - a 15" laptop, helmet, folders and notebooks, 2 small plastic water bottles. . The only problem is when trying to fit tall stuffs like hockey skates, the velcro might not work, so use the compression strap.

I love this thing! i use it all the time. All the pockets and the comfort shoulder strap really make it a joy to use. The deep inner pocket is great for storing all my stuff, and the adjustable internal size is perfect whether you're carrying heavy text books or just an ultrabook and some cables. If you don't already have one, you owe it to yourself to get one.

I'm re-writing this review, because my first go-around sucked. *after a week of using the bag - newly updated! *. . I got the medium edition of this, the 2014 classic timbuk2 messenger (diablo). It is my 3rd in a series of timbuk2 bags i purchased seeking the perfect messenger. Here is the whole list:. . 1.  timbuk2 classic messenger bag 2013 (small, night blue/blue/night blue)- this was my first timbuk2. I thought i wanted it to be small, but i found myself wishing it were bigger every day i carried it. Also, the colors (night blue/blue/night blue) were slightly brighter than i had expected, which was offputting. It was a pretty good fit for my fiance, however. 2.  timbuk2 command laptop tsa-friendly messenger bag (medium, red/gunmetal) - using what i learned from the first bag, i got this one. It was bigger, which i liked. It was cooler looking, which was good. I would have kept and used it without any complaints; but 1 week after i bought it this new bag was released. So i decided to get the new one and send back whichever one i liked less. 3. Medium 2014 classic messenger (diablo) - the new digs. The rest of this review will be about this bag with comparisons to my two previous purchases. . First off, if you haven't checked out the official timbuk2 website for the features of this bag, you should. They are more in-depth there, and include a video which was fairly helpful. . The 2014 classic comes with a number of new features:. . - materials -. The new cordura fabric - the new fabric is smoother to the touch and less stiff than the ballistic nylon used on their previous bag. While this is a matter personal taste, i like that this bag feels more like a bag and less like a floppy box (which the other ones felt like at times). The new material is light, though. The medium 2014 classic weighs less than the small 2013 classic. *the lightness has been huge. I liked it at first, now i love it. *. . - fit -. The new double-loop cam buckle - this is the feature i'm the least sold on right now. It's less intuitive than the cam buckle on the 2013 classic or the 2013 command. Both the 2013 classic cam buckle allowed the bag to be either short or long, but nothing in-between (without adjustment). The 2013 command cam system removes the dumb loop that hangs off the side of the classic, but does so at a cost. When you unbuckle it, the bag will just fall off you if you aren't holding onto it. The 2014 double-loop cam doesn't have a binary "short" and "long" mode. Instead you slide it every time. It is much less intuitive than the the 2013 editions, and i haven't figured out how to do it easily just yet. *correction: i have figured out how to do it fairly easily. If you hold the strap to your chest and use your other hand to unbuckle/slide/rebuckle, it works really well. I'm making this review 5 stars now that i've figured out how to properly utilize the updated cam buckle. *. The new strap pad is more comfortable than the 2013 classic, basically on-par with the 2013 command. The removable cross-strap i haven't gotten to test yet, but i'm really glad the option is there. The strap is indeed very removable. It comes in a plastic sack inside your timbuk2 bag. . - organization -. They removed 2 of the 3 zippered pockets found under the flap. I could see why some people would dislike this change, but i'm all for it. The 3 zippered pockets under the flap on the 2013 editions shared the same physical space within the bag. Filling any of the 3 made it very difficult to use the other 2. I always left 2 of them empty. Side napoleon pocket - unchanged, and still awesome. The internal organizer on the back side of the face of the bag has been simplified. They say it's about balancing the bag, but i'm guessing it was more of a cost-saving measure. The new organizer has fewer compartments (4 total) and no velcro pouch. I probably preferred the old organizer, but it's nothing i wouldn't get used to. *while this is still a bit of a bummer, i've gotten used to the new organizer. It holds what i need it to. *. . - clever extras -. Internal waterbottle pocket - this is an elastic pocket on the left side of the bag. It's too small for a nalgene. You can't even force one in there, it won't go. A standard camelbak will fit, but it's still a bit tight. I don't plan on switching back to camelbaks just to use the waterbottle holder. I'll put snacks in there or something. *i might use this to hold a personal thermos full of coffee, but it's too small for my water needs. It and the stash pocket are currently holding the two heavyish items i carry every day (a leatherman and a portable external battery). *. Internal stash pocket - unchanged from what i can tell. Fit's my 15. 6" work laptop just fine. Corner flaps - they that fold in to keep the rain out. When it rains, i'll be glad i have them. When it's not raining, they can be kind of a pain when taking wide things out of the bag. Overall, i'm glad they are there, though. Low-profile grab handle - since it sits on the rear of the bag and not the top, it looks less gaudy. It also makes the bag lean forward a bit when you use it. Definitely meant for a "grab and go" situation and not for extended holds. This bag doesn't double as a briefcase quite like the command laptop bag does. Partially concealed buckle flap closure - makes it slightly more difficult to close the bag all around. The velcro catches just a little less easily, and the buckles are just a little less easy to get to. I do think it improves the overall aesthetic of the bag, though. *while this might still be true, it's less of a bother than i originally anticipated. The bag closes very easily. *. Compression straps - good feature. Two straps now dangle off the front of the bag at all times. They removed the loop from the main strap, but then added two more straps that dangle off the front of the bag all the time. Probably worth it. . - final thoughts -. The new (2014) classic messenger is my favorite bag thus far, but it's going to take some getting used to. Is it $30 better than the 2013 classic? meh, close call. It's better for my needs than the 2013 command laptop bag, and for that reason, i'm glad i bought it. *after getting used to the new strap and figuring out some of the quirks of this bag, i'm even more glad i bought it. I'm raising my original 4/5 review to a full 5/5. Would recommend. *

F. Annette, Somerset

Probably the best bag i've ever owned. The only things i wish i could change (being picky) is to have a choice of which side to have the strap adjustment on. I typically wear messenger bags on my right shoulder, but with the adjustment buckle being where it is, i have to wear it on my left shoulder if i want to take advantage of the strap adjustment (while wearing it). The other change i would make is the size of the inner water bottle pockets. They could fit a standard water bottle no problem, but not a wide mouth nalgene bottle which happens to be my bottle of choice. Other than that i love this bag. Love the colors, love the design, the adjustable strap, strap pad, stash pocket, extra stitching on high wear areas, all around great design. I got the medium bag; it holds my 13" chromebook (in padded sleeve), two 1. 5" binders, a few pocket folders, spiral bound notebook, and still have room for headphones, wireless mouse, and more.

D. Joanna, Wigan says

I'll start off by saying that i recently bought last years model of this same bag in medium. Once i saw this new bag with the different features i thought "sure, lets try it out". However, i found that the medium bag i had before was massive! i had a ton of extra room in it after fitting in all my stuff. I decided on ordering the small this time and if i didn't like it, i would simply return it. But just to be safe, i ordered a medium as well. So here i sit with three different timbuk2 bags. Here are my thoughts on the small and medium 2014 bags. . Small:. The small bag is great if you need to hold a laptop and a few folders. There are plenty of pockets to keep yourself organized and hold your smaller things. However, i found that this size was just not practical for me. I am a first year teacher that does not have a personal classroom meaning that i travel with my laptop, binder, lunch, water bottle, coffee mug, and several folders throughout the day. . With this bag, i was able to fit my binder, laptop, and the folders. It was a tight squeeze though and that bag looked stuffed with all of those things in it. Seeing as i still needed to fit my extras in it, this bag was sadly out of the picture. . -. . Medium:. Like last years bag, this thing is huge. I can fit all of my things mentioned in the small review with ease. Additionally, i can fit a mini first aid kit, mints, aspirin, post it notes, pens, pencils, and whatever other small things i need. The only problem that i found with this is that my water bottle (32 oz nalgene) causes one side to bulge. Overall, it wasn't that big of a deal and i can learn to live with it. . When looking at the new features there were some things that i wish they didn't remove. 1) the new single pocket front. The three separate pockets on last years bag i found were more intuitive and had better organization. 2) the inner pockets. Unlike last year where there were several slash pockets, a velcro pocket, and pen spaces, this model has only slash pockets with one large zipper at the top. 3) instead of the cam buckle, timbuk2 included a small piece of fabric that you pull to tighten the bag. It feels a little awkward to use at the moment but it make just take some time to get used to. . -. . Comfort:. The new strap is amazing. The air pockets make carrying a heavy bag extremely easy and comfortable. . Again, this bag is great, you can carry a massive amount of stuff in the medium size with room to spare. If you're struggling between the sizes like i was, make sure you read the dimensions carefully. While the small can hold a 13" laptop easily, there isn't much room for anything else. The medium bag will give you plenty of more room to hold your belongings. . Edit: added some photos of the bags and their contents.

I had used a jandd hurricane for the better part of a decade, but with its clips broken, its velcro no longer sticky, and its cordura fraying, it was time for a replacement. Since i'm on a budget, the custom, us-made bags (as nice as they are), are not really an option for me. That's why jandd, banjo brothers, and timbuk2 are cheaper: outsource the labor to mexico (jandd) or china (the others i mention). First i tried a banjo brothers bag (their largest i think), but it arrived with a serious sewing defect. Online store was good about taking it back. Then i ordered this timbuk2 classic messenger bag 2014 large, and it really fits the bill as a carry-all. I use it now more as a casual and larger briefcase alternative rather than a true bike bag, but years ago i did work as a nyc courier, and i would have been thrilled with this bag back then too. The fabric is strong, and reasonably water resistant (though i would not describe it as truly waterproof). The clips and straps are all easy to reach and use. The diversity of open and zippered pockets afford a lot of capacity and utility. I routinely carry keys, medications, reading materials, note pads, pens, markers, lip balm, a small flashlight, a multitool, and i-pad, a water bottle, etc. This bag can haul it. . My only gripe after 6 months of hard use is that the straps are a thin material. That means that my compression straps are beginning to fray a bit where they rub up against the velcro, and the shoulder strap often twists or tangles in ways that my jandd (which used a heavier type of strap) never did. But the shoulder pad is pretty nice, and i think that the straps will remain functional for the reasonable life of the bag (let's hope at least a decade).

This review is for the x-small size. I purchased this size for when i need to go out on the weekends, not as a daily laptop/briefcase/messenger bag. Needed something that could carry reading glasses, sunglasses, phone, keys and occasionally ipad. Overall quality is good. Tough material and strong reinforced stitching. Usability is just okay and could use improvements. . The good: fits my ipad air 2 in the divided area perfectly. Has key leash so you don't drop keys while fumbling for them in the dark. Main compartment on good enough as long as you are not taking a bunch on stuff with you. The strap is easy and quick to adjust. Some pockets to help you keep things separated. . Bad/needs improvement: does not have a napoleon or slash pocket to get to things like cellphone quickly on the outside or on the flap. The flap does not have velcro covers. If you want to be able to open the bag quietly, you can't and it can be a pain to undo the buckets and rip open the flap every time. Other tb2 messenger bags have the velcro covers. No exterior water bottle holder or attachment point. There are two elastic mesh pockets to carry small items or (i guess) a water bottle but if it condensates your bag interior will get wet. There are no pen loops so you'll be searching around in the bag. One would be nice. Top carry handle seems to hold up well, but feels flimsy and doesn't seem to match with the quality of the rest of the bag. . Overall it does what i need it to do and it doesn't look like a purse, but could use improvements in the functional/usability area to make it perfect.

This is hands down the best bag i've ever owned. It's durable, lightweight, and looks great. I use this mostly to carry odds and ends to and from the office. I've used it while riding my bike a bit and the adjustable strap works well. Not sure if it'd hold on a longer ride (i've only gone about a mile with it). Overall, i'd say it's a very functional bag for the price.

I've been wanting a timbuk2 bag for a while now and when i saw a lower price and had the chance to get one i jumped on it. I really like this bag but i did end up returning it and buying the medium sized one because the small was a little too small. So when i first got this bag i tested it with all of my stuff that i would need on an average day and everything fit in it (there were some tetris skills required). I forgot to take a photo but everything for me includes: a 15" macbook pro with a hardshell case, a folder of articles that i need, a novel or book of some form, my wallet, an over abundance of pens, and a phone charger. The charger for my macbook didn't fit with the rest of this in the bag, but for everyone's knowledge a 15" macbook pro will fit. I found that the small timbuk2 held all of my things nicely but didn't leave me any room for my charger (even without the extra cable part) and didn't leave any extra room for other things that i might need on a non-average day. If you carry less that what i need on an average day or only need that it's a good size and a well constructed bag.

Nice depth for people that have a lot of things including a lunch bag. Quality fabric. Bag could use two more inches on the strap. Just a tad short for a shoulder bag. Also, one more zipper inside would be idea. Bag should last along time. Price was right. Thank you.

Good:. The bag is fashionable which i like. It's a good bag. Never had a waterproof bag before. Glad i do now because it has kept my school books dry so many times. . Bad:. The buckle straps fray on the velcro, making it look old. When the bag is almost empty it doesn't sit well with any strap length, particularly when biking. No padding, which is annoying when there are pointing objects in the bag.

I got the small size bag to take on a trip to the uk/ireland with me and then use as a more professional bag during my post-grad job search (replacing my beloved timbuk2 backpack). Really great bag! the size was perfect. Bag will fit my laptop easily, but i prefer to avoid the extra weight and just take my ipad mini most places instead. The loud velcro was a plus while traveling abroad (its own alarm system ; )). I was also glad the bag had no outside pockets and i didn't have to worry about pickpockets. . What i have been carrying: wallet, ipad mini, iphone 6 (in front side pocket for easy access), travel umbrella, water bottle, snacks, chargers, pens, and document folder. This still leaves room to spare for the after work stop the grocery store. . One con: if you don't make sure to press the strap clip down securely or it gets bumped open (which is easy to do), the bag will fall to your knees in an annoying fashion. This happened to me several times in my travels. . Overall excellent bag! i am also fond of the grey with oranges accents. Professional with a little flair :d

Tl; dr - great bag, good size, great strap, and supremely awesome timbuk2 customer service. . I love nearly everything about this bag and the two gripes i had i've found fixes for. I got the medium size in dusk blue with surf strip from eastern mountain sports, inc. Ordering was flawless and arrived fast. Really happy i timed it right to get the last back at a discounted price. I love the color; works well in professional environments with just a hint of fun due to the three-color straps. I've gotten a ton of compliments. . The new compression strap layout is so nice - keeps the bag small on light-load days and i love that i can stash my jacket under the bag on days when i don't have space for it on the inside. The clips being under the flap looks very nice, but you do have the trade-off of it being not as fast to open. I prefer the 2014 look, but be aware that the clips are harder to get at. Not much, but noticeable. . I like the organizational panel layout, though i would make them just a bit deeper to handle pens better. . The size is also perfect for what i wanted. I wavered a lot between a small and medium, even though laptop size guide on timbuk2. Com said i should go with medium. Glad i did - big enough with tons of room, but the bag doesn't feel or look massive - only slightly larger that the mountainsmith day lumbar pack it replaced. It's the perfect size for carrying my work laptop, lunch, books, and all my other edc; it should go without saying that the side pocket (napoleon pocket) is one of the best designs on a messenger bag. It just works. . I did have a small quality issue - the zipper toggle on the napoleon pocket slipped free. I can see how the design is supposed to work and i think the shrink wrap wasn't quite far enough up on the zipper to keep it from slipping off. I was able to re-thread the toggle and moved the wrap higher onto the zipper. A quick hit with the hot air gun and fixed. . I cannot say enough good things about the strap adjuster cam - it is inspired design and engineering. I was nervous that it would bind or require a lot of effort to move. But it is nearly frictionless. Again, it just works. I love it. And because it is so easy to adjust, i have a new method for carrying the bag - adjust the strap to its shortest length, and then i can quickly grab the bag from my car and sling it over my shoulder like a backpack when you only use one strap. If i'm just walking from driveway to house, this is the easiest and fastest way to carry the bag. . When i carry the bag "normally" across my chest, everything is very comfortable. It took me a couple of tries to figure out exactly how the bag was supposed to hang, but now, it's effortless. The cross-strap works well, though it does cause the main strap to bunch a little. The default strap pad is nice and comfortable; i'd like to test a bit more before calling it perfect, but for my day to day use, it is very nice. The strap and pad lengths are fine for me (6'2") and contrary to what i've seen on other reviews, the pad is replaceable, though you'll have to thread the strap back through the adjuster, which might be complicated for some. . The internal water bottle pockets are great, keeping everything upright and water-free. The medium sized bag is just slightly too short for my preferred klean kanteen 27 oz. Bottle with a sport cap. With the flat cap, i think it would be fine. An 18 oz. Fits perfectly, so for the short term, i've switched to that, but plan on getting the flat cap for my 27 oz. Not a ding against the bag, just a trade-off. . I did have two gripes, both concerning the cross-strap. . 1) the elastic band that is used to capture the tail is basically worthless - it holds the tail out of the way only in the most simplistic of cases. But, i fixed that. I ordered a plastic 3/4" thin bar slide from strapworks. Com (available elsewhere) and installed it on the strap. Works so much better, though it was a bit tricky to install; fixed. . 2) when i'm not using the cross-strap, the way it hangs annoys me, gets hung up on things, or nearly caught in my car door. However, timbuk2 customer service absolutely made my day. I suggested that they make the female end of the cross-strap (the part that goes on the main strap) available. Attach it to the other cross-strap point on the bag to serve as a storage anchor. They agreed and are sending me one, no charge. Awesome policy. Well done timbuk2. Once that's installed, i'll just clip the cross-strap into that to keep it of the way. So, also fixed.

Timbuk2 has been making awesome quality messenger bags since 1989, and have been a top messenger bag manufacturer for over 20 years. There are so many little details that timbuk2 has implemented into their bags that not only make them tough, but also aesthetically pleasing, and most importantly, functional. The extra strap that attaches to the main shoulder strap keeps the bag from shifting up or down while you are riding, and is an awesome addition. Anyone who uses a messenger bag regularly while riding their bike has probably experienced first hand what an annoyance it is to have to readjust your messenger bag mid ride. This extra strap minimizes this occurrence. The main shoulderstrap has an adjustment buckle which can be adjusted one-handed. Again this is a functional design element that is definitely not a necessity, but is a nice addition for anyone that does bike commute to work regularly. The dimensions of the bag are 18x12x7 in, and the bag is easily large enough to carry a u-lock, a laptop, an extra layer or a rain jacket, a water bottle and whatever other random items you may need to bring with you. There are several little dividers and pockets inside the bag, as well as a napoleon pocket on the outside under the flap. All in all, this is a well-designed bag with a good amount of space, toughness, and extra bells and whistles that help you enjoy your rides more. Highly recommended.
