If i didn't have a weird left ankle these shoes would be perfect. But because my left ankle sticks out funny these shoes, like every hiking boot i've had, rubs mercilessly on a small spot. It's like a constant toothache on my ankle. Not the shoes fault. Just the way my ankle is. The pain stops as soon as i take them off. Did a 3. 5 mile hike up to baldy ridge in steep snowy hills after only wearing them one day. Felt fine. Soft and flexible right out of the box. Arch support is average. I needed a pair of boots in a pinch because i was hiking 8 miles this past weekend. As usual online store got these to me very quickly (gotta love prime). I got them and the toes on each boot were scuffed up (cosmetic only). I took them home and gave them two good coats of waterproofing spray (you must always do this kids, for any outdoor gear, don't trust factory waterproofing). . I went on the 8 mile hike and they were amazing. Very comfortable, great ankle support, great grip. I'm of the old school way of thinking that you have to break in a pair of boots before you take them on a long hike. Not necessary here. They were good to go right out of the box. I will clean them and hit them with some more waterproofing spray (because i like them to be well treated). Man i loved them i've always worn rock ports and or clark's red wings bass + more then i can recall in the past 65 yrs i did have a pair of timberlines way back and when younger and avid hunter and outdoors person and yr round construction worker i was always in the woods hunting or running the dogs or outside working in slop and mud, my old clark's gave out last winter they started to split and leak . I got these and man they feel great put them one and 1st day had to go out and cranked up the old snowblower and removed over 18" of snow in about 25000 sq ft area and when i was done an hr later feet were dry and as a old bone and warm. But with these i did as i do with all my new boots, i set them in the oven on 100 deg f for 1/2 hr. Too warm up to open the leathers pores then rubbed them down well with sofsole mink oil paste that i also get here 5. 00 . And put them back in for 1/2 hr. Then let then removed them and let set and cool . Then i set them in a foot tub with water up too the toe tops and they set a good 24 hrs they never leaked a drop dry as a bone inside. Put them on went out and they felt like i've worn them for a yr fit was perfect and the boot felt soft and easy on the feet like an old broken in pair does . Best boot i've ever used and i've used them all in my 65 yrs of outdoors and hunting and such and for just 70. 00 or so they as good as 200. 00 ones i used. These are far better quality then i was expecting. Easy on and easy off also and i sent my son's ea. A pair as they hunt and work outside yr round also and they said the same thing as i did best feeling boots they ever had new out the box

I have only one issue with this boot. Overall i like the boots, felt good right out of the box. With that said, i have a size 9 reg foot but on the wide side but not enough to order wider e width. The solution has always been to buy 1/2 larger ie. 9. 5 instead of 9. 0. My current boots being replaced are 9. 5 and i can wear heavy wool socks like i perfer. Not with these, i probaly should have returned them but with thin athletic socks they fit like a glove. I am sure in time when the breaking in has accured the boots will have more room but they really should be a bit looser from the start. What i am saying is order them 1/2 size larger than your current boot no matter what size foot you really have. On the topic of water proofing which has been discussed in other reviews, if you do what you should use a protector on them before the first use. Then there will be no issue with that up to the upper eyelets at that point the lower web of the tung stops and so would the waterproofing, they will resist water for a short period of time at ankle depth but water will seep by. The issue of traction which is a big one for me, i have put them to the test in that area and i am very pleased. I have not had a slip in situations where one would exspect, after rain going over rocks and dead trees no prob. Ah yes the final piece of the puzzle is the support both shank and ankle, i am pleased to say that there pretty good in both areas. Plenty of support. I'm on my 4th pair of these boots. I normally get around a year of use before they wear out. I have not had any failures from the boots and normally replace them when the thread wears out. . In the winter time you can fit a pair of wool socks in them without squashing your feet, i do use some sno-shield or bees wax to repel water. The thread can be slippery on tile floors and ice. Both surfaces are not know for their traction to be fair. . I really like the boot for driving, manual or automatics are not problem with this boot. Some boots are way too wide and you'll have problems driving with them. . I will probably buy another pair after these wear out.
- W. TheolaI waited almost 6 months to write a review for a reason, i wanted to try it in all conditions. First of all i need couple of disclaimers, i bought these a complete number bigger than my regular shoes to allow for foot expansion and a third party insole (footminders: see my review of this item). I am a fine arts photographer who enjoys shooting street and travel pics so i carry a professional full sensor dslr and lenses with me which tend to be heavy. I started using these in miami while walking around town to take pictures, even though miami is a hot weather city, i never felt the shoes were excessively hot. Then i decided to travel to nyc in march during the last snow storm of the season (fist week of march) to shoot a project in b&w film while it snowed in the city. Even though there were temperatures down to 12 degrees and despited walking through freezing rain, snow, slush, puddles, ice, and climbing and offroading in central park these shoes never got wet inside and kept me warm and comfy all day long. I actually took pictures of the ice/slush i was walking around because i could not believe how good they performed in these conditions. In may i took a trip to thailand, laos, vietnam, and cambodia, where the heat was so excessive that made miami look like a mild weather city. Anyhow, i walked all day through good and bad terrain carrying all my professional photo equipment and again the boots performed superbly. By the end of the day i took the shoes off and next day i was ready to go again. The ability of these shoes to perform well on both extreme cold and heat and as well as off road and on road make this one the best purchases of the year for me.
I've been wearing timberland boots for over 10 years and have never found a decent replacement. I go through 2 pairs a year as my daily work involves hiking on rough terrain, leaves, rocks, mud, and steep hillsides. Occasionally, i try a different brand but are always disappointed. Timberland has doubled the price over the years that i've worn them, but i've become addicted to the comfort, light weight, and durability. . Maybe my feet have adapted to the shape, but i can put on a new pair right out of the box and walk all day without any discomfort. If i had one wish, it would be that the tread were a little harder to lengthen the durability because i usually wear the tread out before the uppers are gone. But again, all the other boot brands i've tried either wear sooner or the uppers fall apart. . The last pair was the first that i purchased from online store and they came scuffed up a bit by the internal cardboard packaging, but for my use they were fine.
