Salomon Men’s X Ultra Mid 2 Gtx Multifunctional Hiking Boot (Shoes) 321

Review for mens x ultra mid gtx multifunctional

Price was $96.84 - $267.00. Just hiked 40 miles. I broke these in for 2 weeks first. I had a slight rub on the left foot and so i skipped the first cross lacing for the break in period and that eliminated the rub till they broke in. I also found the arch high in the break in period. Once i put a 30 pound pack on me (i weigh 175) the shoes arches were not noticed at all and supported me the way they should. On the hike (the first 40 of the at - the approach to neels gap) we encountered tons of rock, uphill, downhill and water and never had an issue. My feet would sweat and the ventilation work great for these. I was worried about new shoes for a hike, but these work flawlessly!

Salomon men's x ultra mid 2 gtx multifunctional hiking boot Review (x ultra mid 2 gtx m)

I can wear 9 or 9. 5 in men's shoes. I went a half size up to 9. 5 based on other reviews and these fit just right, so i would say they run a quarter to half size small. And with hiking i tend to wear a slightly more cushioned sock so i wanted that slight bit more room anyway. I have broken these in by working out in them in my home gym and wearing around the house doing yardwork and they've gone on one day hike so far. I'll adjust my review if necessary this spring when they go on their first multi day backpacking trip, but so far: they fit like a tennis shoe (which is to say great, and very comfortably and lightweight) and i'm pleased. I bought them based on my cousin's recommendation - he's on pair 2 for backpacking over the years and swears by them. I was skeptical (i'm old school and tend to like beefier, heavier backpacking boots, but now i'm glad i decided to update my views because these really are so much lighter and more breathable) but so far so good. Easy, sturdy lacing system with good ankle support. I also have a pair of garmont's for day hiking, but they have always rubbed one of my heels on longer hikes so i'm retiring them for these. I also have full leather asolo backpacking boots, but they're so heavy and solid that they hurt my feet (the steel shank) after a couple days on the trail. No hot spots at all in these right out of the box. -B. Rhonda

Salomon Men's Quest 4D 2 GTX Hiking Boot

Salomon changed the design / cut of the quest 2 in some key areas that resulted in the shoe not being as ideal for my feet as the quest 1's were. These changes probably won't affect many with "normal" feet, but if curious please read on. . Please understand that i absolutely love the salomon quest line (and other shoes by salomon), so my observations about liking the older version more than the newer version does not mean the quest 2 is a bad choice - quite the contrary, it is still a wonderful shoe as the other reviews will clearly attest also. It is just not the same for my particular foot anymore, nothing like the first salomon quests released in 2010 (which were ideal for my foot). . Additionally, for those that were not aware - salomon is now offering a "forces" line for some of their shoes - which include the quest as an option. This "forces" offerings are a tactical / military version of certain "chosen" salomon shoes - and interestingly the forces quest is based on the quest 1 (the older model) and not the quest 2. This may change at a later date, but as of this review the forces quests are based on the quest 1. These shoes are all black or navajo in color - and come in a non-goretex version as well as the goretex. Check out tacticalgear. Com or uselite. Com - very cool shoes, and a great choice for those like me that still like the quest 1 better. . Now onto more details . First - i have owned salomon quest's since they came out with "version 1" a few years back and bought my first pair in 2010. I have since owned two pairs, and when i went to purchase another pair a few weeks back, i was surprised to discover there was now a version 2 out. I had not paid close attention to the salomon new releases and only found out about the newer version recently. . Second - my son wears salomon quests also, and my other son is on his 3rd pair of salomon comets (the quests little brother). And to pile on even further, one of my boys wear salomon xa shoes as his every day shoe to school. And my wife has a pair of salomon trail runners! so let's just say our family has logged a fair amount of miles on salomon quests and comets, plus their other offerings. . The biggest reason i opted for the version 1 quest is they were renowned to fit people with "hard to fit" feet like mine very well - wide in the toebox, low volume in the forefoot, and a thin low volume heel. (think duck foot but not yellow! ). The version 1 was cut tight across the forefoot, had a tight heel cup and the side and toebox taper / flare was perfect for a wide foot. Most of all, the area over the forefoot and toebox was not overly elevated and cut tight, meaning those with thin feet did not have a bunch of extra / unneeded room. . Version 2 is a fine shoe. No doubt. But they are definitely cut differently, and some of the features in version 1 have changed in version 2 that changed the game for me, and have resulted in me opting out of the new quest 2. Most won't really care or notice these changes, but those who targeted version 1 due to hard to fit feet might be disappointed. The biggest change has to do with the volume increase over the forefoot and over the toebox. The version 2 is cut higher and simply has increased the volume in those areas significantly. If you put the two versions side by side, it is easy to see this. The quest 2 is just "taller" than the quest 1. Next, the cut of the area on the outside edge just below the toe box has a more narrow / aggressive slope, meaning those with wider feet may find the quest 2 tighter and uncomfortable on the outside edge below the baby toe. . In actuality, these changes probably mean they will fit more people and result in more people with normal feet (unlike me) to fit into the shoes - so from a business perspective, it was probably a smart move by salomon. But for me, i have already begun my search for the older version, and plan on buying an extra pair or two of the quest 1 to put away since the fit me so well. Again, the quest 2 is a fine shoe, and carried forward the great quality and reputation from the quest 1 - but the changes were enough to make me look elsewhere. . Hope this helps one or two folks who may have purchased the quest 1 for the same reason i did! -) i would still recommend salomon quests to anyone that they fit correctly. . In closing, just wanted to add i mostly use the salomon quests for day hiking, or in situations where i am not carrying more than 25 lbs in my pack - my legs / feet are older and i prefer a heavier / sturdier shoes for the heavier loads, but for younger legs the quests could be fine for heavier loads. I know of some that use the quests for heavier loads. I also have no issues using the quests on rocky / rugged trails, they perform well on smooth and rough trails. The only thing they don't get a passing grade on is cactus spines - i have had one or two find its way in due to the softer sides. . Oh, one more thing - there is a good news / bad news ending here - my son, who does not suffer from the duck foot problem i do - actually likes the fit of the quest 2 more than the quest 1, and wants to buy a pair! so even in our family there is a split decision on the quest 2. But as i already said. It is still a fine shoe. Thanks for reading! . . Update 4/10/2015: i purchased a pair of salomon quest 4d forces gtx from uselite (navajo in color) - which are modeled after the quest 1's. For me, it is a keeper, it checks all the boxes, and seems to fit like the earlier, 2011 version of the quest 1. (the later versions of the quest 1 were cut more like the quest 2 than the earlier quest 1). I wanted black, but for some reason the gtx version in black goes 12 to 13 with no 12. 5 offered (that may change) so i got the navajo - and you know what, the color has grown on me. I like it! . . I also tried the non-gtx version of the quest forces, but for my foot, tastes, there was something about the non-gtx version that just felt off. I returned them. Still a great choice for those seeking a non gtx version. Note also that opposite of the gtx version - the non gtx does come in 12. 5 in black, but not in navajo. . Additionally, i found a pair of quest 12. 5's online in the audobahn / black / flea - got them for $160 and they are on the shelf for my son for later this year when he wears out his current pair. With these, i am going to make the last stand on quest 1's and see where it goes from here. Still hoping salomon returns to the cut design of the quest 1 from early 2011 / 2012 timeframe (with the beefier tongue, leather, slimmer cut, etc). But doubt that will ever happen and sure those are history.

The updated quest 4d 2 gtx retains outstanding stability and grip, with a more ergonomic tongue for improved comfort, laces that stay tied better, and fresh design details

Salomon Men's Quest 4d 2 Gtx Hiking Boot (quest 4d 2 gtx m) FAQ.

Probably one of the best boots i've ever owned, i bought 2 already and love salomons shoes, i own 4 pairs in different types, i have 6 pairs of asolo boots and these solomons are just as good. With a good pair of socks they work well in all kinds of weather, worked in high temps in az and cold weather in colorado great for heavy pack loads in rough terrain. In fact most all my work buddies own the same pair and same the same thing. Well worth the money -Notice from X. Kathlene, Niedersachsen

Click to Show salomon men's quest 4d 2 gtx hiking boot (quest 4d 2 gtx m) Details

Salomon made a winner with this boot - it is one of the few boots that is durable enough for light backpacking, yet light enough to use for day hiking also - plus it has a gore tex lining to make them high water resistant. And oh, did i mention they are also a very comfortable boot? (assuming they fit your foot type). . How are these boots cut, and how do they fit? first off, my foot type - have a thin foot in girth, wider in the toe box with the widest point under my baby toe. Plus, my forefoot is narrow and i have a thin / low volume heel. For my foot type, shoes are hard to find, especially hiking boots. For me, if the shoe fits in the toe box, it might be too wide in the forefoot, or my heel slips because it is so thin. . These boots are cut perfectly for my foot type, and they lock on tightly to my heel. They are probably the best fitting hiking boot i have ever owned. If your foot is wide in the forefoot, or thick in or over the arch, or you have a high volume heel - this boot make not be the best for you. These narrow considerably in the forefoot, and if your forefoot is wide, these will be uncomfortable imho. . Moreover - if you like to put custom footbeds, orthopedic inserts, etc into your boots - forget it with these boots. You have to see them to understand why, but these were simply not made to accommodate even the thinner custom footbeds or inserts. If the footbed is very thin and cut just right, maybe - but again footbeds are not ideal in these boots. . I like these so much i wear them for yard work at home also, in addition to hiking. I would buy these again in a heartbeat - five stars for this buyer! . . Thanks for reading!

Salomon-men's-quest-4d-2-gtx-hiking-boot-(quest-4d-2-gtx-m) set picture

- J. WadeI began my thru hike of the at in feb with the original version of this boot. It lasted me over 1, 000 miles until pa where the rocks kind of tore it up a bit. The boot was still good to go but i had a pair of unused merrell's waiting at home so i decided to get those sent out. With about 500 miles left in the trip, i saw salomon released the quest 2. I didn't feel like buying another pair of boots but i felt like i needed a good pair before i headed into the white mountains, so i decided to purchase the new quests and had them sent out to vermont where i would pick them up. . With about 484 miles left of the at i received the new boots. I was like a kid on christmas. I popped them on, they felt a little stiff but i know they had a short break in period. It was only 10 miles before they felt worn in. I completed my thru hike a couple days ago and i'll say that i will never use another pair of boots. These quest 2's are amazing. Extremely comfortable, i never had a blister in them. The lacing system is unique, you can loosen or tighten each of the three top levels of the lace to how you want. I would usually just tighten all of them. I will say that the laces they provide with do not stay tied throughout the day. I've never had a problem keeping laces tied expect with the quest 1 and 2. I recommend you double knot it. . The boot can take quite a beating. If you're unfamiliar with the at, the last 484 miles of the trail going north includes the white mountains, southern maine (which some including myself believe is harder than the whites), the 100 mile wilderness and then the summit of katahdin. I took the boots straight from the box and into all that and it held up extremely well. I noticed that the seams on the front of the boots do come open though, same thing happened with the quest 1s that i began with. Except this time is happened quicker. The boots still worked fine but i was a little upset to see that. . Against water, the quest 2s do very well. You can fully submerge the boot up near its collar and as long as you remove your foot fast enough, you will stay dry. This was a great feature to have on the at. Other hikers i was with would have to carefully hop around little 2-3 inch puddles of mud and water while i could just walk straight through it and stay dry. I remember one stream that i had to ford. In the middle of it i would have to put both feet completely under running water to get across. I figured i would just suck it up and deal with wet feet. To my surprise my feet were still dry even after having both feet completely under water for 3-5 seconds with each step across this overflowing stream. I couldn't believe it! now that being said, water can and will get through the boots. If it's raining all day or you're hiking in snow, your feet will begin to get wet after a few hours of hiking so it's not completely waterproof. . If you're like me and need good ankle support, these boots will do the trick. It's a high cut boot so if you roll your ankle while hiking (which i do a lot) you will be fine. The same goes for overall foot protection. The soles of the quest 2s are pretty tough, you'll have to step on a very sharp pointy rock to feel it. . As for traction and grip, the quest 2s also excel in this area. I still slipped a few times on rocks and roots but so did every other hiker, i just seemed to do it less. I've had to go up some rocks that were nearly straight vertical up and down. The boot didn't slip at all. I felt like a vampire at times being able to walk up walls. Sometimes i feel the tread is too good, a few times i didn't lift my feet high enough off the ground and the tread would get caught and cause me to nearly fall down. Nice to know the tread is that good. After summiting katahdin, i continued onto the knifes edge which is a very narrow and dangerous trail. It's all rocks and requires four point climbing in many sections. The boots almost made my feet stick to the ground, felt great. The knifes edge is not the place where you want to slip and lose your footing. . As i mentioned earlier, the boot is very comfortable. Almost like a heavy duty sneaker. I carried a load of 40-45lbs on the trail and the quests (1 and 2) had no problem bearing that weight and keeping my feet comfortable. I also ran on the trail a few times when it was getting late and i needed to make up some distance. Obviously, i did so with a pack on my back. The quests were able to handle this as well. A good ruck running boot if you wish to do so. . All in all this is an amazing boot, i'll probably stock up one or two more just for future hikes. If you're a traditional hiker like myself and is looking for a good mid weight boot, look no further. . Pros. - nice lacing system. - great traction/tread. - does well against water. - very durable and lasts long (have nearly 500 miles on mine and they can still go. Over 1, 000 on the quest 1s). - good looking boot. - almost zero break in time. - no blisters. - comfortable. - great foot and ankle protection. - can handle heavy backpack weight. - easy to put on and take off. . Cons. - laces tend of come loose. - seams wear out

Alright, i "broke" them in over a month, clocking 45 miles. However, i wasn't carrying a 50 lb pack during this time of breaking them in. I did 80+ miles on the ot, which required quite a bit of hiking on stones, boulders, and rocky terrain. After 40 miles or so, i began to get blisters on both feet, below my large toe. I was able to complete the hike, using "moleskin" around the blisters, doubled up. I'll have to get some type of insoles for future treks. Waterproof? oh yeah! you can get these up to the top for well, as long as you want to stand in a few inches of water. This made a few water crossings really nice, not having to change footwear on the fly. Comfort? really nice. Reminds of my salomon ski boots, which are very comfortable as well. Overall, this is a great product. For hiking difficult terrain, over a week, they showed no signs of wear and tear. I'm very glad i went with these on my ozark trail hike.

The F.A.Q. for salomon men's x ultra mid 2 gtx multifunctional hiking boot

I have been buying these boots for 15 years and they work great. Definitely a light weight boot so you don't want to be lugging an over weight pack, probably around 35-37 lbs is the limit and i carry around 30 at the start of a trip . I backpack long trips, 10-30 days. When i wear them in the snow it feels like they get wet but they don't, you just feel the cold which is to be expected. They do fine in the rain. Sizing is normal.

I was worried about these boots at first because i received them on thursday and was going hiking on saturday so there was no time for breaking them in. Hiked 7 miles in the mountains and had no issues. Very nice pair of hiking boots

This really is a great boot. Unlike other salomon products they do need to be broken in. I'm giving them 4 stars because i don't like the tread on them. They don't grip well in slippery conditions. . What i like is that they wick away moisture very well. I wore them during a thunderstorm for about 5 miles. There was no chance of keeping them dry. I didn't get a single blister. . I have flat feet and these boots provide great arch support. I also require a wider toe box which these boots have. . If you buy these, try replacing the boot laces with gutted 550 cord. You'll feel the difference.

R. Bullock, Bexley

Took these on the oml at big bend national park, and they are by far the most comfortable boots i've ever worn! highly recommend! no blisters!

Y. Audrey, Washington says

Most comfortable boots i have ever worn. My 5-star rating is based on several things. I have owned mine for 9-months. 1st i bought mine online using the sizing chart (makes me nervous) & they fit perfectly. I chose the 13. My size varies from 12 to 13. I could not believe how light there were. Insanely light for a boot! much lighter than timberlands. I truly felt there was zero break in period. I read a few poor reviews saying they needed break in time. Not true here. I bought in late september wanting a comfortable boot that breathed that would give me stable footing in mild winter conditions. A friend told me they were water proof. They are! i stood in a puddle on a very cold day 30ish. No leakage. I have a high arch & standard width. This boot gives me all the support & comfort one could expect from paying over $100 for boots. But i feel these boots over delivered on those expectations. I have not had any back issues since owning these. I love the contra grip! if i had to make a complaint which anyone can do. I would have 2. These boots squeak if you stand and rock back and forth. Not noticeable with normal walking. The other is my grip is showing a good amount of wear on my heels. If a tire can go 70, 000 miles i would like think the rubber could be improved. I took a pic to show my wear. I have worn these boots everyday. Cold/hot. Does not matter. With the right wool socks i have enjoyed healthy, comfortable dry feet in all conditions. I am pretty sure i will only get 1yr out of mine. But i wear mine every day & i am a guy who buys new tires before they get to a point i feel unsafe.

Perfect! great color and superior waterproof! great product!

P. Rowe, Stockport says

I just received these so i'll only comment on the fit and construction, with an update after wearing them more. . My normal size is 10 other than a 9. 5 for my brooks running shoes. I took a guess and went with 10 on these after reading the reviews. The 10 is a perfect fit! i hate narrow shoes, but these feel just fine even after coming from the wide toebox on my keen targhee ii boots. . They are very light weight, the tongue is nice and padded (i hate when they slip down close to the lace) and they are ridiculously grippy. . I'll update my review once i had a chance to wear them hiking for a few miles. I hope they work out and become my goto backpacking boot. . Update - after wearing these for a few days while hunting, they really broke in nicely and they're even more comfortable now. I didn't get into any rain, but after walking thru a lot of wet grass, they kept my feet dry.

G. Clara, Illinois

I love these boots! the first time i wore them i was hunting for mule deer and hiked about 7 miles in total. I can tell they need to be broke in a bit more, which i have come to expect from anything with gore-tex, but were very comfortable. Throughout my day of hunting it was snowing and in the low 30's. I was wearing gators and heavyweight socks and my feet were warm and dry even through the 3-5 inches of snow. Very pleased with these shoes.

A. Parker, Idaho says

These boots are really nice. Compare to other boots i have had (adidas, timberland, army, bates) these are lighter and material seems to be good. The size run a little bit larger so if buying consider that. 1/2 number less will be a good recommendation to be comfortable since the size run out almost 1 number larger. I have ware the whole day and although they are light and comfortable, there is something (some kind of boot support) at the ankle of the boot that after 4 hours starts aching you. That is why i give 4 starts. Besides that i will give these boots a 5 stars.

K. Anonymous, Trafford

Really nice fit and comfortable.

Very nice , comfortable , lite and looks good !

H. Stacey, Yukon Territory

I've had i don't know how many pairs of merrell chameleons over the years. I always loved them, but the quality has severely declined over the past few years. They just literally fall apart in half the time they used to. So i gave salomon a shot. They are slightly narrower in the toe than the merrells i'm used to, but still good. Rubbed one little toe for the first couple of days of break in, but now fit comfortably. Time will tell if these last very long.

F. Cageen, Barnsley says

After putting over 200 miles on them i feel like i can talk about these boots a little bit. First off they are the most comfortable boot i've owned, glove-like fit. They are super lightweight compared to most hiking/backpacking boots out there, just a bit heavier that a trail running shoe without sacrificing stability. Totally waterproof, the only moist that builds up inside them is because of my profusely sweaty feet. The grip is ok, i prefer vibram all day long but they get the job done. Breathability is pretty decent, it's getting hot out here in texas so we'll see how they behave in temperatures over 100 degrees. Overall you can't go wrong with these, they're just awesome!

L. Hurst, Worcestershire

No need to break them in. Whoever designed these shoes needs an award! it took me a couple of tries to figure out how to tie the laces (they come undone if you tie them improperly/ what you may be use to - so it's a good idea to look up a video and learn! ) they are not ridged and easy to drive a car with. I was worried the shoe would look a little fat (especially the tongue) but they actually look quite fashionable once you tie the shoes properly. Would buy these shoes again.
