Review for mens quest gtx hiking

Price was $140.00 - $297.00. For years i was a supporter of hiking in minimalist trail running shoes, and scoffed at people that wore their big clunky goretex boots. Well, long story short, after one particularly long, cold, and wet backpacking trip in the adirondacks, my friend with his big clunky goretex boots showed me just how wrong i was. I've always loved salomon's gear, so i decided to give their boots a try. I can now honestly say i don't know why i'd ever hiked in anything else. These got me through tons of winter and summer hiking and backpacking, keeping my feet dry and warm the whole time. The grip is great, even on wet steep rock. Work as well as they can in ice and snow, but work even better with a set of microspikes, which easily fit over the bottom of them.

Preamble

Alright, i "broke" them in over a month, clocking 45 miles. However, i wasn't carrying a 50 lb pack during this time of breaking them in. I did 80+ miles on the ot, which required quite a bit of hiking on stones, boulders, and rocky terrain. After 40 miles or so, i began to get blisters on both feet, below my large toe. I was able to complete the hike, using "moleskin" around the blisters, doubled up. I'll have to get some type of insoles for future treks. Waterproof? oh yeah! you can get these up to the top for well, as long as you want to stand in a few inches of water. This made a few water crossings really nice, not having to change footwear on the fly. Comfort? really nice. Reminds of my salomon ski boots, which are very comfortable as well. Overall, this is a great product. For hiking difficult terrain, over a week, they showed no signs of wear and tear. I'm very glad i went with these on my ozark trail hike. Salomon Men's Quest 4d 2 Gtx Hiking Boot Review (quest 4d 2 gtx m)

Some of the best boots i've ever worn, and i spent years in military combat arms and several years working in afghanistan. I bought these boots to wear to an extremely demanding sniper school in arizona, and they were amazing! it was incredibly hot with sharp, rocky terrain and huge cactus and the boots held up to everything. On top of it my feet felt great at the end of some very long, demanding days. -U. Garner

Fit perfect right out of the box. I'm 6'3 230 lbs and they held up without any issues. I wear a size 12 in everything from nike to north face. I'd say they are now my favorite pair of boots that i own. I also like the color that i purchased, the iguana. Looks great with a pair of jeans or khakis. The added goretex is really appreciated during wet hiking. The materials used in this boot are super durable and strong. I expect these to last many years. Salomon has a 2 years replacement should they have any issues. I'm glad i purchased. Check out my youtube channel, justin uriah photo, for a video on these boots.

Click to see NoticeSalomon Men's Quest 4d 2 Gtx Hiking Boot (quest 4d 2 gtx m)"I originally saw these in another store, but never got to try them on for a fit check. I was told they were narrow and wasn't sure how they might fit when i actually tried them on as i consider some of the narrower boots hard to size to my foot. I have had salomon boots before and most seemed to narrow for my foot. I read countless reviews on these and found them to be highly recommended for hiking and trekking. I intend to use them as a tactical hiking boot so i will have to see in the long haul how they hold up. I am extremely anxious to try them out as i was told the sole grip is one of the best on shale and rock. I want to try them in a variety of weather and climates to see how well the goretex breathes and will most likely update as soon as i have. For this review, i will simply put out some pros and cons:. Pros: very light weight and extremely sturdy in the initial try-on. They were not narrow at all for my foot and fit true to size, for which i was not only grateful, but very impressed. I had a particular merino wool sock in mind and they were awesome right out of the box. The laces are the toughest i have ever seen on any stock out of the box and have a waxy feel to them. They appear to be highly resilient and the lugs for lacing up are quick with the laces finding their slot rapidly. Fabric is excellently stitched and i found no blemishes on initial inspection of the rand and welds. So far this boot seems the best investment of any i have ever bought in this price point and in some cases, much higher. . Now, the cons: i can't find one yet. I would buy another pair of these tomorrow to make sure i didn't lose out on such a great deal. I will be trying them out extensively soon and we'll see if all my raves are lived up to. I will definitely update as soon as i know more how they respond in tactical hiking. I really can't wait to get these out in the field."

The F.A.Q. for salomon men's quest 4d 2 gtx hiking boot

Two years ago, i began working as a member of a land survey field crew in georgia. The work involves a lot of moving over rough terrain through the woods while carrying heavy loads. I had never worn boots in my life prior to this job. My first set was a pair of hastily-purchased cheap wal-mart brahmas. They offered zero ankle support and destroyed my feet with awful blisters every day i wore them. Needless to say, i was quick to replace them. My second set were some expensive merrells, which i had heard good things about. They were definitely more comfortable and supportive than the brahmas, but they had issues in regards to traction and durability. . One day my friend (an army ranger) offered to loan me the salomon boots he'd been issued. I accepted and wore them for half a day at work and i was very impressed, though they were a bit small. I went home that night and ordered a pair half a size larger. . They fit my feet perfectly the moment i laced them up. They offer incredible ankle support on even the most treacherous terrain, along with great traction and unparalleled comfort. They are definitely a heavy-duty boot, but i can wear them all day comfortably. They are just as snug as they need to be, and in all the right places. The shock absorption is also quite decent. As an added bonus, while salomon doesn't mention it in a lot of their advertising, the boots *are* waterproof. I've waded through creeks that came up to just below my ankle and came out the other side with my socks completely dry. The boots can be cleaned relatively easily. . Now, for the downsides. First of all, there's the cost - but i can honestly say that you get what you pay for in this case. Secondly, arch support. While this isn't an issue 90% of the time i wear the boots, sometimes over certain types of really rough terrain i find that the arch of either foot begins to ache. It's not a deal breaker, but it's worth noting. Finally, durability. These boots have been through quite a bit in the six months of constant abuse i've put them through and only now are they showing their wear and tear. There's a bit of fraying along the front and the rubber toe has begun to detach slightly from the main body. The boots are still 100% functional and i consider these to be cosmetic flaws. However, while lacing up my boot yesterday one of the brackets that holds the lace tore free from the boot in a way that can't be fixed, causing that string to hang loose on that side (though they still lace up tight for the time being). Other than that, durability has been impressive. The boot feels sturdy and well-made; the tread shows no signs of damage despite the various sharp rocks, broken glass, and other stuff i've walked over/through. Even the laces themselves feel as if they're made from sort of 550 rope/paracord-like material - very heavy-duty stuff that doesn't show the slightest bit of fraying. . Overall, they're the most impressive boots (and probably the best all-around footwear, period) that i've ever owned. If you can afford them and you need to do some serious work-related or recreational hiking, these boots won't disappoint. . Note: salomon recommends a unique method of predicting the right size by placing your foot on a piece of paper, tracing a line along the outside of it with a pencil, and then measuring said line. Perhaps i did something wrong, but all i can say is that the size i got by measuring my foot in such a way was two sizes smaller than what actually fit me. Just something to keep in mind.

A number of questions have been asked here.

Love these boots! period! they had a great feel right out of the box. I have hiked and packed hundreds of miles in them this past summer and fall and have not had one blister, and not one problem with the construction/function of these boots. . Hiked through streams, wet mountain meadows and snow with the gore-tex membrance working flawlessly. . Boots are designed for backpacking and yet they feel just a good on my feet as my lightweight north face hiking shoes do, with the added bonus of great support over varied terrain and the way they relieve foot fatigue. . Likedt them so much i bought a pair for my son and he loves them as well.

These are amazing boots. Very light, and durable. I wore them during a overnight hike, deep into the forest. It started raining at night and continuously downpour during the day. For the 2 might treking out, the trails we hiked in had turned into mini streams. By the time i got to the car, i was soak down to my underwear. To my surprise my smartwool socks were about 80-85% dry due to these amazing boots. . Also on a side note, i didn't get a chance to break these boots in before my hike. I didn't get any blisters nor any discomfort from wearing them them new.

H. Walsh, Northwest Territries

The boots are gorgeous. Lots of snazz, and seem well put together. With the thickest sock darn tough makes, the boots were tight. With the second thinnest one, too big. That seems about right. I have a really long big toe. It's going to jam in steep descents. Can't blame the boot, i'm weird. I will live, like i did with my vasque boots because i think it will be only a slight horrible crushing. They seem light to me and you can just put them on and take a walk. No break-in, it seems. I love the high heel. The treads seem, um, not very much. The knobbie thingies seem not very tall. I hope they last. They probably will. I think i did the right thing not getting one of the lighter made class of boots. I think if you only have one pair, it should be mid-weight like these. I will update.

C. Monique, Wisconsin says

I choose these boots based on a review i read on outdoorgearlab. Com. I usually wear a size 8-1/2 or 9 shoe/boot. I followed a salomon's sizing guide i found elsewhere, measured my foot at the end of the day (27 centimeters), and ordered the size 8. 0. It was too small as my toes were touching the front of the boot. I returned them and bought size 8. 5. Same problem. I returned them and bought size 9. 0. That worked. I replaced the inserts, which are highly-touted but only okay for my feet, with avia flex recovery anti-fatigue insoles. Experimented with different lacing methods while breaking them in and ended up using standard lacing. Like me, you may have to double-tie the knot when lacing as the laces are very slippery nylon and don't stay tied for me. Have only hiked in them minimally since our trip to utah had to be cancelled, but i'm confident that these boots will stay comfortable and provide adequate support for many years to come.

Probably one of the best boots i've ever owned, i bought 2 already and love salomons shoes, i own 4 pairs in different types, i have 6 pairs of asolo boots and these solomons are just as good. With a good pair of socks they work well in all kinds of weather, worked in high temps in az and cold weather in colorado great for heavy pack loads in rough terrain. In fact most all my work buddies own the same pair and same the same thing. Well worth the money

Salomon changed the design / cut of the quest 2 in some key areas that resulted in the shoe not being as ideal for my feet as the quest 1's were. These changes probably won't affect many with "normal" feet, but if curious please read on. . Please understand that i absolutely love the salomon quest line (and other shoes by salomon), so my observations about liking the older version more than the newer version does not mean the quest 2 is a bad choice - quite the contrary, it is still a wonderful shoe as the other reviews will clearly attest also. It is just not the same for my particular foot anymore, nothing like the first salomon quests released in 2010 (which were ideal for my foot). . Additionally, for those that were not aware - salomon is now offering a "forces" line for some of their shoes - which include the quest as an option. This "forces" offerings are a tactical / military version of certain "chosen" salomon shoes - and interestingly the forces quest is based on the quest 1 (the older model) and not the quest 2. This may change at a later date, but as of this review the forces quests are based on the quest 1. These shoes are all black or navajo in color - and come in a non-goretex version as well as the goretex. Check out tacticalgear. Com or uselite. Com - very cool shoes, and a great choice for those like me that still like the quest 1 better. . Now onto more details . First - i have owned salomon quest's since they came out with "version 1" a few years back and bought my first pair in 2010. I have since owned two pairs, and when i went to purchase another pair a few weeks back, i was surprised to discover there was now a version 2 out. I had not paid close attention to the salomon new releases and only found out about the newer version recently. . Second - my son wears salomon quests also, and my other son is on his 3rd pair of salomon comets (the quests little brother). And to pile on even further, one of my boys wear salomon xa shoes as his every day shoe to school. And my wife has a pair of salomon trail runners! so let's just say our family has logged a fair amount of miles on salomon quests and comets, plus their other offerings. . The biggest reason i opted for the version 1 quest is they were renowned to fit people with "hard to fit" feet like mine very well - wide in the toebox, low volume in the forefoot, and a thin low volume heel. (think duck foot but not yellow! ). The version 1 was cut tight across the forefoot, had a tight heel cup and the side and toebox taper / flare was perfect for a wide foot. Most of all, the area over the forefoot and toebox was not overly elevated and cut tight, meaning those with thin feet did not have a bunch of extra / unneeded room. . Version 2 is a fine shoe. No doubt. But they are definitely cut differently, and some of the features in version 1 have changed in version 2 that changed the game for me, and have resulted in me opting out of the new quest 2. Most won't really care or notice these changes, but those who targeted version 1 due to hard to fit feet might be disappointed. The biggest change has to do with the volume increase over the forefoot and over the toebox. The version 2 is cut higher and simply has increased the volume in those areas significantly. If you put the two versions side by side, it is easy to see this. The quest 2 is just "taller" than the quest 1. Next, the cut of the area on the outside edge just below the toe box has a more narrow / aggressive slope, meaning those with wider feet may find the quest 2 tighter and uncomfortable on the outside edge below the baby toe. . In actuality, these changes probably mean they will fit more people and result in more people with normal feet (unlike me) to fit into the shoes - so from a business perspective, it was probably a smart move by salomon. But for me, i have already begun my search for the older version, and plan on buying an extra pair or two of the quest 1 to put away since the fit me so well. Again, the quest 2 is a fine shoe, and carried forward the great quality and reputation from the quest 1 - but the changes were enough to make me look elsewhere. . Hope this helps one or two folks who may have purchased the quest 1 for the same reason i did! -) i would still recommend salomon quests to anyone that they fit correctly. . In closing, just wanted to add i mostly use the salomon quests for day hiking, or in situations where i am not carrying more than 25 lbs in my pack - my legs / feet are older and i prefer a heavier / sturdier shoes for the heavier loads, but for younger legs the quests could be fine for heavier loads. I know of some that use the quests for heavier loads. I also have no issues using the quests on rocky / rugged trails, they perform well on smooth and rough trails. The only thing they don't get a passing grade on is cactus spines - i have had one or two find its way in due to the softer sides. . Oh, one more thing - there is a good news / bad news ending here - my son, who does not suffer from the duck foot problem i do - actually likes the fit of the quest 2 more than the quest 1, and wants to buy a pair! so even in our family there is a split decision on the quest 2. But as i already said. It is still a fine shoe. Thanks for reading! . . Update 4/10/2015: i purchased a pair of salomon quest 4d forces gtx from uselite (navajo in color) - which are modeled after the quest 1's. For me, it is a keeper, it checks all the boxes, and seems to fit like the earlier, 2011 version of the quest 1. (the later versions of the quest 1 were cut more like the quest 2 than the earlier quest 1). I wanted black, but for some reason the gtx version in black goes 12 to 13 with no 12. 5 offered (that may change) so i got the navajo - and you know what, the color has grown on me. I like it! . . I also tried the non-gtx version of the quest forces, but for my foot, tastes, there was something about the non-gtx version that just felt off. I returned them. Still a great choice for those seeking a non gtx version. Note also that opposite of the gtx version - the non gtx does come in 12. 5 in black, but not in navajo. . Additionally, i found a pair of quest 12. 5's online in the audobahn / black / flea - got them for $160 and they are on the shelf for my son for later this year when he wears out his current pair. With these, i am going to make the last stand on quest 1's and see where it goes from here. Still hoping salomon returns to the cut design of the quest 1 from early 2011 / 2012 timeframe (with the beefier tongue, leather, slimmer cut, etc). But doubt that will ever happen and sure those are history.

These boots are amazing. They fit perfectly, there was no break in and they're still going after a year of a fat man beating them to death. I didn't want to review them when i received them, as i couldn't provide a fair assessment at that point. . They are well worth the money spent! i paid around $160. 00 for them, well below a box store price, i should add. . Prior to wearing these boots, i suffered from plantar fasciitis in both feet. I won't attribute my lack of pain completely to these boots, but they definitely deserve much of the credit in finding relief from foot pain! . . The boot is extremely comfortable, durable, supportive and provides proper traction. These were designated as work boots initially, but are so comfortable i use them away from work as well. . I don't take the time to write reviews, but in this case, these boots warranted the exception. Buy them if you're on the fence. They're worth it! . . The attached photo is from today. The boots were purchased august of 2015. If you aren't sure about size, find them in a box store and try them on.

6 weeks ago an experienced backpacker friend of mine ask me if i would want to go an a backpacking trip with him that would cover approximately 32 miles. I accepted and began my discovery as to what tent, sleeping bag and especially what boots i would use as i had never hiked past 3-4 miles much less carried a heavy backpack (my pack on this trip was 36 pounds). I searched various boots online and at local stores and after much investigation i bought the quest 4d 2 solomon brand. My first "practice hike" with these boots was 10. 2 miles with no breaks just straight through. (i wanted to break them in real good) i am very impressed with these boots as they seem to not have any of the normal breaking discomfort associated with all other new boots i have experienced in the past. After my 10 mile solo hike my friend and i then embarked on our 30 mile hike. Again i want to say that my pack was 36 pounds for the 30 mile hike and i was a "newby" at this however i experienced no discomfort due to the boots. We made two river crossings in water that was 4-8" deep and i didn't get wet. I was wearing additional boot gaiters though but the boots did get their fair share of immersion and didn't fail me. I know boots are a very personal thing and i rarely recommend items this personal to anyone but if you are searching for a great boot you have found it in the solomon brand. Also noteworthy is that the toe box on these never cramped my feet on all the down hill miles i covered on the 30 mile hike. I am sold on these boots! ps-always wear wool or wool blend socks on a hiking trip! i believe much of my positive review is due to the fact i wore proper socks for the task at hand.

Bought these last minute for a backcountry montana hunting trip. I wanted to get a pair of schnees or kennetreks, but time was short. I thought i would have more luck dealing through online store with short amount of time, if i needed to exchange. I needed a lightweight, waterproof, uninsulated boot. I wore them for 12 hours a day, for 7 straight days on hunt. I only "broke" them in for about a 30 min walk with my dogs on my property. After 30 minutes of initial use, i knew i made a good buy. I have a pair of salomon trail runners, and they are my new favorite running shoes. So i felt good about purchase even before buying them. Back to trip, i was in moderately steep open sage and timber. I did a get into a few soft and rocky spots. These boots gripped well, and was never unsure about my footing. Had a wet afternoon, and some storms kicked up late in the day. I did not pack raingear for day. This was the only time my feet became a little damp. This was just from rain wicking down my non-waterproof pants and soaking into my socks about boots. I walked through plenty of small streams, and muddy areas only to come out with dry feet. I have been on several hunts where you spend all day hiking with a pack on back. Usually when i get back to base camp, i just want to get boots off and into a pair of slip on camp shoes. These boots are comfortable. Did not have that feeling "i can't wait to get these boots off back at camp". As far as holding up, i can't comment. They should last, but they won't get as much use in the off season. At least not compared to a week in the backcountry of montana.

I began my thru hike of the at in feb with the original version of this boot. It lasted me over 1, 000 miles until pa where the rocks kind of tore it up a bit. The boot was still good to go but i had a pair of unused merrell's waiting at home so i decided to get those sent out. With about 500 miles left in the trip, i saw salomon released the quest 2. I didn't feel like buying another pair of boots but i felt like i needed a good pair before i headed into the white mountains, so i decided to purchase the new quests and had them sent out to vermont where i would pick them up. . With about 484 miles left of the at i received the new boots. I was like a kid on christmas. I popped them on, they felt a little stiff but i know they had a short break in period. It was only 10 miles before they felt worn in. I completed my thru hike a couple days ago and i'll say that i will never use another pair of boots. These quest 2's are amazing. Extremely comfortable, i never had a blister in them. The lacing system is unique, you can loosen or tighten each of the three top levels of the lace to how you want. I would usually just tighten all of them. I will say that the laces they provide with do not stay tied throughout the day. I've never had a problem keeping laces tied expect with the quest 1 and 2. I recommend you double knot it. . The boot can take quite a beating. If you're unfamiliar with the at, the last 484 miles of the trail going north includes the white mountains, southern maine (which some including myself believe is harder than the whites), the 100 mile wilderness and then the summit of katahdin. I took the boots straight from the box and into all that and it held up extremely well. I noticed that the seams on the front of the boots do come open though, same thing happened with the quest 1s that i began with. Except this time is happened quicker. The boots still worked fine but i was a little upset to see that. . Against water, the quest 2s do very well. You can fully submerge the boot up near its collar and as long as you remove your foot fast enough, you will stay dry. This was a great feature to have on the at. Other hikers i was with would have to carefully hop around little 2-3 inch puddles of mud and water while i could just walk straight through it and stay dry. I remember one stream that i had to ford. In the middle of it i would have to put both feet completely under running water to get across. I figured i would just suck it up and deal with wet feet. To my surprise my feet were still dry even after having both feet completely under water for 3-5 seconds with each step across this overflowing stream. I couldn't believe it! now that being said, water can and will get through the boots. If it's raining all day or you're hiking in snow, your feet will begin to get wet after a few hours of hiking so it's not completely waterproof. . If you're like me and need good ankle support, these boots will do the trick. It's a high cut boot so if you roll your ankle while hiking (which i do a lot) you will be fine. The same goes for overall foot protection. The soles of the quest 2s are pretty tough, you'll have to step on a very sharp pointy rock to feel it. . As for traction and grip, the quest 2s also excel in this area. I still slipped a few times on rocks and roots but so did every other hiker, i just seemed to do it less. I've had to go up some rocks that were nearly straight vertical up and down. The boot didn't slip at all. I felt like a vampire at times being able to walk up walls. Sometimes i feel the tread is too good, a few times i didn't lift my feet high enough off the ground and the tread would get caught and cause me to nearly fall down. Nice to know the tread is that good. After summiting katahdin, i continued onto the knifes edge which is a very narrow and dangerous trail. It's all rocks and requires four point climbing in many sections. The boots almost made my feet stick to the ground, felt great. The knifes edge is not the place where you want to slip and lose your footing. . As i mentioned earlier, the boot is very comfortable. Almost like a heavy duty sneaker. I carried a load of 40-45lbs on the trail and the quests (1 and 2) had no problem bearing that weight and keeping my feet comfortable. I also ran on the trail a few times when it was getting late and i needed to make up some distance. Obviously, i did so with a pack on my back. The quests were able to handle this as well. A good ruck running boot if you wish to do so. . All in all this is an amazing boot, i'll probably stock up one or two more just for future hikes. If you're a traditional hiker like myself and is looking for a good mid weight boot, look no further. . Pros. - nice lacing system. - great traction/tread. - does well against water. - very durable and lasts long (have nearly 500 miles on mine and they can still go. Over 1, 000 on the quest 1s). - good looking boot. - almost zero break in time. - no blisters. - comfortable. - great foot and ankle protection. - can handle heavy backpack weight. - easy to put on and take off. . Cons. - laces tend of come loose. - seams wear out

Love these boots, have both these and asolo fugitives. They are both excellent boots and i've had no issues with either. So took these with me on a recent backpacking trip with backpack weighing in around 40lbs. Uphill and downhill these boots plus merino wool socks kept me comfy. The best part was when crossing a 2-3ft creek with water current my buddy was wearing his hunting boots that went up to his shin and had issues with water getting in and soaking his socks. Me on the other hand had no issues what so ever but i also had on arcteryx ar pants. I still can't believe i had no water inside my boot. Those pants and these boots work wonder together and i couldn't be happier.

Have backpacked in steep and rocky terrain with these in past few months. Most comfortable boots i have owned. I wear an 11d and they fit true to size. Do not go up on size unless you want to accommodate wigwam or thick smart wool socks. Cold and wet weather with no leaks so far. They are backpacking boots that are meant for stability while carrying a load on your shoulders. If you just carry a camelback or small daypack, opt for a mid-hiker or trail runners. *the only slight issue i can find is that the tread is not as aggressive as some others i have worn. I have had some problems getting traction on steep and slippery climbs. That's only relative. For most intensive purposes, they provide adequate traction and by far the most comfortable boots i have owned.

Salomon made a winner with this boot - it is one of the few boots that is durable enough for light backpacking, yet light enough to use for day hiking also - plus it has a gore tex lining to make them high water resistant. And oh, did i mention they are also a very comfortable boot? (assuming they fit your foot type). . How are these boots cut, and how do they fit? first off, my foot type - have a thin foot in girth, wider in the toe box with the widest point under my baby toe. Plus, my forefoot is narrow and i have a thin / low volume heel. For my foot type, shoes are hard to find, especially hiking boots. For me, if the shoe fits in the toe box, it might be too wide in the forefoot, or my heel slips because it is so thin. . These boots are cut perfectly for my foot type, and they lock on tightly to my heel. They are probably the best fitting hiking boot i have ever owned. If your foot is wide in the forefoot, or thick in or over the arch, or you have a high volume heel - this boot make not be the best for you. These narrow considerably in the forefoot, and if your forefoot is wide, these will be uncomfortable imho. . Moreover - if you like to put custom footbeds, orthopedic inserts, etc into your boots - forget it with these boots. You have to see them to understand why, but these were simply not made to accommodate even the thinner custom footbeds or inserts. If the footbed is very thin and cut just right, maybe - but again footbeds are not ideal in these boots. . I like these so much i wear them for yard work at home also, in addition to hiking. I would buy these again in a heartbeat - five stars for this buyer! . . Thanks for reading!
