Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack (Outdoor Recreation Product) 4837

Review for packs talon 22

Price was 0. I suffer from analysis paralysis - a condition whereby one needs something but spends weeks researching the thing in order to make a decision, and almost does not make said decision in time for his trip. I eventually settled on this pack. My requirements were simple, i need to fit a weeks' worth of clothes and travel basics in here for carry-on only air travel. So far, i've taken this to mexico, belize, and las vegas for a week each, and was able to fit enough stuff just fine. I did not have to check any luggage and this thing even fits underneath airline seats. Further, on both trips i also stuffed an osprey daylite pack inside of this one, so that once i reached my destination i could use that as my daily carry. Perfect. . Quality seems good and the pack is very light and easy on the shoulders fully loaded. I like that it has the h20 pouch if i ever needed it - actually i've used it to stow my surface tablet on each of the trips and that has worked well so far. I've found the little pouches on the bottom strap to be very handy in airports to store travel docs and passports etc. . One complaint is that i wish the inside had a few more separate compartments for better organization. Overall, a great pack and would recommend for light travel.

I bought this for a four day, three night supported hiking trip on the inca road to machu picchu. I used it as my airline carry-on, then switched it to my day pack for in the city, and my day pack for the hike. It has many pockets to separate and organize your things. It has a spot for a water bladder which i used and really liked. It had plenty of space for everything i needed to have with me during the day. The belts and supports were comfortable and helped the pack ride in such a way that it didn't bother my back on which i've had two back surgeries. I was worried that carrying so much water would make it too heavy for me, but it was comfortable the whole way. Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack Review (Osprey)

I have really enjoyed this day pack so far. Only had it a few months and it has been perfect for long day hikes. It is light, i like the material, good craftsmanship, and it really fits the bill of you just need somewhere to carry a few extra layers along with snacks and water. It has loops for tracking polls, but i have not used this feature yet. I have a larger pack for long hiking trips where i am using polls and need to store sleeping bags and additional hiking equipment. I would buy this again especially for the price. -B. Wade

I have had this bag for a while and it still looks like new. This bag is great for short-term travel and trips where you just need one backpack and want to keep things simple. Seriously, osprey bags are so well made, they actually will repair them for life. . Features i love:. . The big mesh pocket in the front is great for stashing pretty much anything. Super helpful when youre moving around. The small pocket at top (near the shoulder straps) is great when you are in transit and need something quick, its also hidden so you feel ok keeping valuables there like passport / phone that you need quickly. The material is lightweight and the bag feels like air on your back. The straps are pretty nice and very comfy, almost too comfy. The price matches the quality and you really are getting a premium bag that will last you forever (literally). . Buy it and you will not regret it.

This is my "go to" backpack for all of my athletic needs. This includes mainly hiking and mountain biking. It has a comfortable waist belt with pockets, an adjustable torso length (this feature is the main reason i prefer the talon 22 to the osprey raptor hydration pack), an ingenius helmet attachment clip that keeps the helmet snug to the backpack, a super handy external stretch pouch, a hydration pack compartment, and enough room to carry what i need for the day. It's also very lightweight compared to my typical school bag style backpack. The waist belt may not be as extravagant as waist belts found on the larger hiking backpacks, but they are wide, soft, and they do help keep the full weight of the pack off my back. . The only downside? i wish the stretchy external pocket was made of a sturdier fabric. The fabric they used is so thin that it's almost transparent and it can snag onto things fairly easily. Not a big deal, just a minor gripe."

I needed a larger pack for a multiple day hike on mount washington and found this. It was excellent! every feature on it seems to be very well made and able to handle abuse. It fit me comfortably even at full capacity. Very good pack!

Osprey Packs Talon 33 Backpack (014633) FAQ.

Lightweight and comfortable. I used it recently on a 3 day, moderately foul weather trip (lots of rain & snow, nights into the low 20's). It held everything i needed comfortably but didn't leave room for many "extras. " but in my opinion it was well worth it to be lighter on my feet and more agile. I would highly recommend this pack for anyone looking to backpack light and fast. . On a side note, i highly recommend getting the rainfly as this pack does not have one integrated into the design. Definitely worth an extra $25! -Notice from O. Emma, Pennsylvania

I had been looking for a light weight non tactical backpack for day hikes to an over nighter. I saw this pack reviewed several times and gave it a try. This being my first osprey i was pleasantly surprised at how light weight it was. I loaded it with a 15 lbs and took a stroll it road quite well fit tight to my back and did not shift to any great degree. There is ample room for what you would need for a 2 - 3 day outing. I am very pleased with the talon 33 so far i would recommend for anyone needing a light weight backpack.

- J. OlgaMy husband loves this backpack, it's bigger than the talon 22, and he can carry lunches, jackets, and trekking poles for the whole family :). . He let me try it and it's very light and comfortable as well. . I personally like the way that the talon 22 opens, the zipper goes over the top, while for this pack, you stuff it like you do the bigger multi-day hiking backpacks, but that is my only small criticism-that said, my husband doesn't mind it at all.

I used this talon 33 for a day (11 hour) hike and carried everything i needed with room to spare. I could use it for overnight hikes. It's very well built with plenty of storage and many storage areas (large and small). This pack has function ability over practically every square inch. Used a camelbak antidote reservoir (3 liter) with it.

The F.A.Q. for osprey packs talon 22 backpack

I already own the older version talon 11 that i use for short / light day hikes, but wanted a close fitting, frameless "mid-sized" pack for the longer day hikes when i want to take extra gear. I own a stratos 24 and a deuter 32 futura (among other packs) that i have used for longer day hikes, but with their rigid frame and larger size they are overkill - thus, i wanted something else in between the talon 11 and the larger mid-sized framed packs. . The talon 22 has filled the mid-sized, light pack void very nicely. It literally checks all the boxes on what i look for in a fast and light daypack - namely:. . - a pack that keeps the load close to the back - the talon 22 has a nice snug fit that sticks to your back very nicely. If correctly sized, not overloaded and with the load correctly compressed, it will ride on your back contours and melt right into your frame. I am 6' 3" with a 20" torso, and the highest setting on the torso adjustment fits perfectly. . - exterior front pocket for raincoat, wet gear, etc. - the talon 22 has a generously sized front exterior pocket for your coat, or whatever you want to put in there. Only drawback is there are no compression laces or straps over the front of the compartment, but that is a minor issue. . - hip belt pocket - the talon 22 has two very well positioned and generously sized hip belt pockets that are stretchy and hold things nicely. I get a lot of use out of hip belt pockets - and packs without them are a deal breaker. And many day packs either omit them or they are tiny in size. . - smaller zipped gear pocket - the talon 22 has a nicely positioned and generously sized zippered gear pocket, which is separate from the larger gear compartment. . - side water bottle compartments - the talon 22 has two stretchy water bottle pockets - and although they do not fit the fatter sized 1l and 32 oz nalgene bottles, etc, they do fit 16 and 24 oz taller bottles very nicely. I use a 3l platypus with this pack, and don't need to stuff 32 oz bottles in the side pockets. . - hydration sleeve / chamber - the talon 22 check this box with an easy access hydration sleeve that can hold a 3l bladder. . - large / panel loading gear compartment - the talon 22's main compartment is easy access and easy to load and get things out of - the flexible, non-framed design of the pack makes it easy to use the gear compartment. . - loops / hooks for hiking pole(s) - the talon 22 includes this also. . - as low a weight as possible - at 1 lb, 8oz and still loaded with all the features mentioned above the talon 22 takes its place as a light, fast packing day pack. . - a pack that looks good - the talons, as well as many ospreys, just look good. Osprey has always combined simplicity with form and function, and their packs always get comments on the trail. . Beside all the things i look for above, the talon 22 has some extras to boot. First, it has a bike helmet stash cord on the front, which is a great feature and means i will also give it a try biking. It also has a stash compartment on the front strap for small things to carry. . Note the talon 22 shines with loads less than 20 lbs, and is at its max in the 15 to 20 pound load range imho. Your mileage may vary, but with the frameless design, too heavy a load starts to weight the pack down, and the close to the back weight distribution starts to break down and you can feel the load pulling on your lower back and hips. If you want to carry loads greater than the 15-20 lb range, you should probably be considering a framed pack like the stratos 24, or many other packs. Again, this point can be argued, and i am sure there are some that carry these types of loads in the talon with no issue, but for my needs, the pack is at its best at less than 20 pounds. . Would i recommend the talon 22? you betcha, without hesitation - as long as folks realize that it is a fast / light pack that is not meant for ultra heavy loads, and they get it correctly sized, the talon 22 can be what some consider the best / optimal day pack for the longer hikes where you may want to pack a few extra items. . Thanks for reading!

I cannot say enough good things about osprey. The talon 22 fits the bill for one of the best day hiking backpacks. The talon 22 is a panel loading pack which isn't always my favorite type of pack to carry, but you can load this thing down with a lot of gear. It has a great suspension system and the waist belt although sewn in has great functionality to allow great comfort and movement on the trail, as well as supporting heavier loads in the pack. Love this pack!

Have another version of this pack and i bought this one because i love the other one so much. This one fits a different ticket, but it also has the osprey helmet holder, great fit, great color. Cool material so its nice and soft and easy to stuff things without banging your hands and fingers on the zippers etc. Rarely do i leave for an adventure without this thing.

Im in the ccc so i really need good gear, so far this has held up well on my spikes. I'm out there in the wild for hours on end and the weather gets crazy, no torn or anything of the like have happened so far. I'm extremely satisfied with this buy! feels great on my back and hold all my stuff!

P. Williams, Sachsen

What a great little daypack. Perfect amount of support and features without adding a bunch of pockets and crap that a dayhiker really doesn't need. Comfortable and the addition of the hip belt pockets that are actually large enough to put my iphone 7 in comfortably are a plus. Another feature that i wish this brand would spend more time with on their larger packs are the side stretch pockets that allow a 1liter nalgene bottle to fit comfortably, and the best part allow me to retrieve without a partner helping or dropping the pack. Very important for those of us who have tried bladders and decided that bottles were better for us. If you are a bladder person the pack does have an externally loaded bladder pouch which is where the pouch should be. Color is the best part if you love orange, it is a gorgeous shade of orange.

I. Pamela, East Riding of Yorkshire says

I love this backpack. I got it for day hiking in yosemite and it worked great. There is a little less space than i thought there would be, but other than that it worked great for what i needed. All the straps are easily adjustable, the water bottle pockets were easy to use, and the zippers come with a finger hole rather than just a little cord which was convenient. The hipbelt was across my stomach, not quite my hips but that worked, and the pockets on either side were great for a phone and sunglasses. I also liked the top pocket, great way to keep little items or fragile items from getting crushed beneath all my water bottles. Lastly, i really liked the bright cobalt color, i could easily be picked out among all the black packs. With all that said, i'd absolutely recommend this product.

N. Erickson, Bretagne

I've had this pack for a while now, and i absolutely love it. It's a great day pack for someone like me who likes to carry a small camera, usually a jacket or sweatshirt (for the early starts), a banana or two, some clif bars. In other words, if you pack not-so-light, or will be out on the trail all day, this is for you. I use it with a platypus 3-liter hydration pack and they work very well together. The small pockets on the hip really come in handy for your cell phone, wallet, keys, energy bar, etc. . I've used it for mountain biking, but recently bought the smaller synchro 10 to use for cycling as this one is overkill for that activity. . The other great thing about this pack is the company behind it. I recently made a big mistake and put this pack in my washing machine. I'd gone biking without my fender attached and had mud caked on, so i thought if i put it in the washing machine on "delicate - hand wash", it would get better results than actually hand washing, which i did in the past. Well, it got caught on something and the result was a torn pack. I sent an email to the company asking if there was something i could do, and they had me send it back to them for repair. I had to pay shipping to them (which is more than fair considering it was entirely my fault), and they sent me back a replacement as mine was too far gone. Stellar customer service, which is exactly why i bought the synchro 10 immediately. I want to support a company that has my back. Well, the pack on my back at least. ; ). . Highly recommend!

Full featured pack for sure. Extremely comfortable. I bought the 22 liter one, and it barely feels like i'm wearing it. The material is a bit thin, so you wouldn't want to use it to store your school books, but that's expected for this type of backpack. It's got a lot of really great features, none of which really add much weight to it, including:. . * ice pick/trekking poll storage. * generously sized side pockets. * helment attachment. * supports big water bladders. * fully adjustable. * a whistle! yes, really! i owned this for about a month until i realized it had it. It's on the buckle for the chest strap. * fully adjustable in more ways than i can count. . I'll admit that part of me bought this bag because i've played a lot of dayz (a survival video game) and the taloon backpack in the game is modeled after it, but i mostly bought it for the trusted name, great features, and lifetime warranty. If i ever do anything more than day-hiking, i'll definitely be buying the bigger versions. I've recommended this bag to all my friends (even female friends - there's a female version of this backpack called the tempest).

This was my first day hiking pack. I used it for 13 miles of hiking in yosemite. The pack held up great, such that i hardly felt like i was wearing it. The pockets are intelligently positioned and the partitions make sense. I used a platypus big zip lp reservoir ( that fit great. The strats for the mouth piece on the pack worked well. . Highly recommended. . Update about sizing: i'm 5'10", 166 lbs (i wear medium or small shirts). I tried both the small/medium and the medium/large on in a store, and decided on the small/medium. The ridged part at the top of the pack (that helps give it structure) was poking me just a bit in the back of the neck. This did not occur on the small/medium.

Great day pack. I bought this to replace my aging jansport after a very good experience with the talon 44 during a week of hiking in arizona (including three days in the grand canyon). Comfy and light. Bought it used and saved about 35%. It looked brand new and in the original packaging when it arrived.

I really love this pack. It is my go to pack for a quick trip to the gym, a one night hotel stay, day hikes, mountain biking, weddings (change of clothes and optional bar), etc. . I took this bag with me to greece on a three week trip and i spilt red wine on it on the flight over. I'm a very anxious flyer. Who am i kidding, i'm terrified of it. When we got back i threw my pack in the washer with a little bit of tide even though i was convinced this was futile and the stain came right out. I have no idea what the material is, but it does not hold stains. . The patented helmet hook is a game changer. Ride to the bar or restaurant of your choice and stow your helmet so you aren't that goof ball who has no where to put his helmet but on his head. My only complaint is that the bag should have a rainfly included for the price they get for it.

Couldn't find this osprey pack at my local outdoors store and definitely couldn't find a pack with this many bells and whistles at such a price! i haven't carried a backpack in 25 years, so when i took up exploring the outdoors, i decided to start with only the best. Let me just say this osprey pack has changed my life - it's been to mauna kea, hi with me as well as a full 2 day hike to the summit of mount fuji, japan and i would now never dream of traveling in a backpack of any other brand. The sheer number of secure pockets with weatherproofed zippers is insane. The fit is perfect for someone my size and proportion (i am a petite 4"11 woman, 109lbs with a slightly longer torso than legs). The double fastening clasp is absolute magic in relieving all the pressure off your back, i packed at least 50lb of gear for an overnight stay at mount fuji including a 16oz camelbak bladder, 3 x 8oz plastic water bottles, a 1qt nalgene bottle and a 1l water bottle, along with snacks and the usual mountain hiking fare. The adjustable double clasp on the front left me feeling like i was carrying an empty bag, not 50lb of gear. . Note: this did not happen to my pack because i was cautious about what i placed in the mesh pockets, but i noticed other hikers wearing osprey packs with this gauze mesh outer pocket - it can tear, snag and begin pilling/bubbling if you place sharp/heavy objects which stretch against the lightweight mesh, or expose the mesh to a lot of contact friction.

First off, sizing. Based off the osprey pack fitting guide, my torso length is 20" (i'm 5' 8" tall), which is combined with a 19" torso as falling smack dab in-between the s/m and m/l. . I took a chance and ordered the s/m, as online store was out of stock of the m/l, and all the third party vendors were $25+ more expensive. The straps have velcro in a slot in the back, and you move that up and down to size the backpack. There are also adjustable straps at the very top of the shoulder straps. Be sure to adjust those as well. There are hashes (guides) to assist you in sizing with the velcro portion. At the lowest hash (largest size), the s/m fit me perfectly. The bottom sits right where it's supposed to, and the top doesn't stick up further than it should. I suspect a m/l at one of its lowest sizes would have fit as well, but i can't say for sure. Your girth will likely also play some role in sizing (i'm 5' 8" and 175 lbs), and all the straps fit, but i could see if you were on the thicker side, there could potentially be issues with the strap sizes, due to their lengths, most especially the waist strap. Mine fits with a couple inches to spare. . On with the review! . . I've always wondered at the velcro adjustability of an osprey talon. A part of me has always thought. Can that really hold under the weight of a filled bag? reviewers (both here and in gear magazines/sites) never appear to look at that aspect. I have no long term info, but so far it appears to work fine. I've never felt a hint that the velcro isn't going to hold. . Do not buy this to be a book bag, or an office bag, etc. It's light. The material is thin. I can't speak for durability, yet, but i can't imagine this would stand up to my years back when i was in college, as a book bag. It's not meant to. It's certainly a hell of a lot sexier than a typical book bag/backpack, but don't let that seduce you if what you're really wanting to use the pack for is carrying textbooks. . It's super comfortable, and breathes relatively well. That said, at the end of the day, let's be real. You're going to be sweating. Probably a lot. Don't expect miracles from any backpack. I've always felt this aspect of people reviewing day packs is similar to geeks arguing over minute differences in clock speed. I tend to go fairly "hard" when hiking; i'm going to be hot regardless. It's possible the back breathability differences between packs are more noticeable if you're just strolling/biking around town or something. . The pockets in the waist strap are interesting. For some reason, i am able to open/close the one on my left with one hand, but the one on the right gets stuck about halfway when trying to close (due to the thin material that doesn't keep its shape). Or, more accurately, the one on my right requires me to lean into it and jiggle around with the zipper if i want to do it one handed. I imagine this could be one of those things where a minute difference in rigidity/how your pack is settled/etc could affect this, so i certainly wouldn't take this to mean everyone's pack is going to be the same. . On the top of the pack is a zippered compartment (for keys, etc). It's got nice cushioning, presumably to keep your electronics safe. It's big enough for tablets-not for laptops. . I fit a 3l platypus bladder in just fine. I imagine virtually any normal bladder would fit.

Excellent pack - about the right size, very durable and comfortable on long hikes. Very good compartments and i really like the hip belt compartments - i keep my phone and some snacks in those. Most importantly, the pack genuinely fits to your frame, provided you buy the right sized pack, and it stays relatively cool on your back even in the hottest, most humid weather. . While this is a terrific pack, there are a few things that could be improved, in my opinion. First, the exterior front pocket is good for a raincoat or other larger item, but because the pocket does not fully zip closed, items can fall out and are not fully protected if it rains. Second, it does not come with a rain cover (although you can buy an excellent osprey rain cover from online store for $15). Third, the side outside pockets fit a standard camelback bicycle bottle, but are not large enough in diameter to fit a standard 1 liter nalgene bottle - which requires you to put nalgene bottle inside the pack. Finally, the hip belt is too short for the m/l pack - it fits me fine in summer but once i put on a down vest or jacket, the hip belt is too short. These are relatively minor issues, but to me the difference between 4-1/2 stars and 5 stars.

Such a great bag! i needed something for around town, and a day pack for when i'm just hiking for the day. There's lots of other different packs out there, but i found the size of this one to be perfect. Not too big, not too small. Nice to have hip belt pockets. Fits to my body well, and keeps my back fairly cool. Wish it had some more pocks on it, but i made do with my own little storage system.
