Minus33 Merino Wool Men’s Chocorua Midweight Crew (705) 5555

Review for men's chocorua midweight

Price was $65.94 - $89.99. I bought both the shirt and pants for wearing under my flight suit this winter. They are amazing! absolutely worth the money. I never feel too hot, or too cold, they don't smell and they look great. I already ordered more. The only problem is that they're a bit on the big side - i wish i'd ordered a size down for the shirt (i prefer a base layer to be a bit tighter fitting). But, the current size makes for a looser fit that looks a lot better than something form fitting showing off my excess weight :)

Introduction

This is my second purchase of this sweater. It has served well for five years of backpacking. I also have the heavyweight version and used it an equal amount. The only issue i had was the fit. I am 5'10 and 175 lbs. I have an average build, not a muscle man and no beer gut. This time around i ordered a large as opposed to medium. I will be ordering the heavy version in a large also. The medium for me is a little short in length and also short in the sleeves. They are good inexpensive sweaters. I like them. Mine are being replaced as they have a couple of tears which were through my abuse. Minus33 merino wool men's chocorua midweight crew Review (705)

I normally wear xl in shirts. According to the size chart i needed an xl. . The shirt is too big. It is naturally stretchy, but the cut for xl was far too generous. Shirt is about 6 inches past my waist, arms are too long and there is way too much material in armpit area ( drapes down about 3" while holding arms out), that would eventually cause chaffing. This is a baselayer. You want it somewhat snug. . Everything else is as to be expected. Great product, plenty warm. . 4/5 stars because i have yo go through the hassle of shipping it back and returning it. -E. Denise

This is excellent. It has exceeded my expectations. . This is my first experience with this brand. Here is what i like:. - the fit is right on. I ordered xl and it fits like other xl garments. - fabric feel - it's soft, it's stretchy, but it keeps it's shape. - breathability - it's warm without being hot, like wool is supposed to be. . The sleeves are on the long site (which i love), as is the torso, so it tucks in well and makes a great base-layer.

I wore this hiking up mt monadnock a couple of days after thanksgiving. The temps were in the 50's but it was very windy at the top. This kept me warm with just a thin base and a windbreaker. Well worth the money. Feels very good and not thick at all considering how warm it is. This is a good medium base. The great thing about wool is that if it does get wet it will still keep you warm. Also does not smell the way synthetics will after a day of hiking."

Minus33 Merino Wool Women's Franconia Midweight Bottom (803cg) FAQ.

I am 5'5 and currently 165 lbs; the size medium is perfect for me. I bought mine in black( mid-weight). It has ample room should i gain a few pounds and will also work if i lose a few. . That being said, i'd hoped to use it as leggings for under a skirt along with as long johns under jeans, but the knees tend to get baggy quickly, and i plan to try a sz small for that purpose(as leggings) if i have the opportunity to buy another set. I did put on spandex-cotton leggings over them and it seemed to look fine, though. . Lengthwise, they are generous(proportionately, my inseam is fairly long, so most leggings end halfway up my calves, and i cannot wear petites). If i could have them custom made i would still add an inch or two in length. . The cut is definitely waist height(above the hips), not low rise, and as a mom of 5, i prefer the 'mom-jeans" cut anyways. . As for warmth, i have worn them outside at a windchill of around or below 20 deg f with wool knee socks and a skirt and found that though the wind cut through a bit, i wasn't terribly cold. With jeans or cords over them, they are toasty warm. . Itchiness: i'm very sensitive, and everything makes me itch a bit- spandex gives me an itchy rash where it touches my skin. There is a subtle itchiness that for me is bearable, and no worse than some of my non-wool sweaters, plus- no rash! i am comfortable wearing top and bottom as pajamas or long johns. There is less itchiness after washing it. . I wash mine inside out in cold water with other woolens on my gentlest cycle(handwash), and then tumble dry. There is some pilling. . The material is nice and thick in my opinion, but like a t-shirt not a sweater thickness. There are cuffs and its very stretchy and it is flattering. Love these woolens! -Notice from M. Donna, Harrow

I love these thermals. When i took them out of the package i thought there was no way they could possibly keep me warm. I was so wrong. This morning when i began my commute, it was 16 f. I usually walk for about 30 minutes with a brief light rail ride in the middle and then i stand around for upwards of 30 minutes waiting for the keyholder at work. Between these thermals, sorel snow boots, a down parka, and a hand knit wool balaclava i am quite comfortable in sub-freezing temperatures. While i am walking i may even break a sweat! but the real test is when i'm out in the cold, but sedentary. Usually (standing for that amount of time in these temps), without these thermals i wouldn't have any feeling from the waist down - as if i'd waded to work through waist deep ice water. However, after standing around outside for half an hour this morning, i was certainly not toasty, but i was comfortable. I'd suggest adding more or heavier layers if you are spending more than an hour or two in sub-freezing temps unless you plan to be active. On the other hand, my place of employment never gets above 68 f or so, but when i've experienced temps higher than that while wearing these under other layers i felt like i might spontaneously combust. . As for the technical qualities of this item: the stitching is strong and not noticeable against skin. They are easy to wash and i haven't experienced any pilling. They do seem to run a touch large and stretch pretty dramatically with wear (not an issue with quality, basically unavoidable in 100% wool knitted garments). I would probably go down one size in the future. . In conclusion, i wholeheartedly recommend these thermals. I can't imagine ever going out in the cold without them again.

- T. FabianWe are hunters and we have a big vacation planned in the near future going to yellowstone national park in the winter. I live in louisiana where our cold is a wet cold. But in montana it is a dry cold. After reading many informative documents on how to dress for the cold and the extreme cold in montana, i knew i needed to purchase some clothing made from merino wool. Merino wool wicks perspiration away from the skin. I don't need my my husband getting out in the cold and getting wet only to get pneumonia! keeping dry helps to avoid hypothermia in the winter. . I ordered these bottoms for myself in the charcoal color in large. The fit is perfect. I will be using these as my base layer. This bottoms are lightweight not bulky like i thought it would be. It is very soft and comfortable not itchy at all. When i think of wool, i think of the heavy, thick, itchy, bulky material but not this 100% merino wool. The stitching is done perfectly. These have flat lock seams to prevent chafing. I washed mine as soon as i received them in cold water and tumbled in the dryer on low. I have tried them on and i am very pleased with them. I love the cuff that these have around the ankles. I have not had the opportunity to wear these in the cold yet still 100 degrees here in louisiana but i have been wearing them in the house just to make sure they fit and are comfortable. They have passed that test and they are very warm but i can't wear them for long right now because they do hold the heat in. I highly recommend this product. I paid full price for this item but a day after i purchased these, the price went up.

I purchased this midweight minus33 xxl bottoms and the matching minus33 mindweight xxl crew top a while ago for to take on a week long elk hunting trip into the great alpine wilderness of eastern washington. I knew it was going to be cold up there and i am not someone that easily stays warm in the elements. Cutting wind, snow, ice, frigid rain. You never know what is happening next. I decided to save my review until after i'd put these to the test. . I was looking for 100% wool base layers in something my size and was very pleased to find these, not only in my size, but made for a woman. Bless you, minus33! i've spent a lot of very cold, miserable winters wearing other "thermals" that either didn't help at all or made me sweat so much becuase they did not breathe that i was uncomfortable and froze anyway. They seem to be well made, i found no flaws in the initial "once over" nor after i put them on and wore them. I had no issue with the elastic as one person had reviewed. They wore well and laundered nicely. Even in a bucket of ice cold stream water, being poked with a stick and hung over the camp stove to dry. If you can call that laundering. . Both the top and bottoms came in the mail quickly, and when i tried them on, i was very pleasantly surprised. It was so nice to put these on and have them fit so well. I am long through the body and tall, and these fit like they were custom cut for me. Stretchy and cozy, i was immediately happy. The crew top was long enough in the hem to fit my long body nicely and the sleeve was long enough that the cuffs actually came down to my wrists. The bottoms were also cut nicely, long enough for my long legs, fit me very well all around, perfect through the butt and crotch, waist line high enough to not worry about "cracking out" when i bend over, which has always been the price of having to wear men's thermals (not to mention no "front door" to have to sew shut! ). The material did feel just a little bit itchy when i first yanked them out of the package and tried them on, but that went away after a gentle wash and dry. . I can honestly say that these minus33 100% wool, midweight base layers made all the difference in the world this last season. Never before have i been actually warm when out in the elements for any length of time. The 5 mile hike up into camp in a foot of snow would have rendered me a sweaty, wet, frozen mess before but this time i was comfortable and toasty, even when we stopped to rest and cooled down. I had packed polar fleece thermals with me just in case these weren't enough, but those never made it out of the pack. I was so toasty in these, i often just wore them by themselves with a down vest for hiking around in, carrying my heavy outer wear in a back pack to put on over them when i got to where i would be sitting. . They really proved their worth in the wet, too. One morning i slipped, lost my footing, and fell into the creek and had to hike back to camp just wearing them, carrying my outerwear and my gear. My boots were soaked but i was also wearing 100% wool socks. I wasn't exactly warm along the way but i wasn't frozen by the time i got to camp. My dad was an ice fisherman and he always, always wore his wool and told me that there was nothing better, especially if you ended up wet. I wish i'd have listened to him years ago, i wouldn't have spent so many winters shivering. . These came home in great shape after a week of crawling around in the elements being worn constantly as under wear and as only wear. I literally lived in these things and wouldn't hesitate to buy another set. Thank you, minus33 for an absolutely outstanding product.

Minus33 Merino Wool Men's Kancamagus Midweight Bottom

I was able to pick these up when they were on a discounted price from their regular $50-60 dollars. I paid roughly $33 i think for that price these long johns are amazing! the mediums i ordered are not very form fitting, so you might want to try one size down if you are looking for something snug. My other complaint is that the elastic at the base is not very strong/tight causing the legs to ride up at night when i wear them. This is not a major issue for me but i would prefer it didn't happen, that might be a reason to size down your order to get a better fit.

Product story blankets are nice. Pants are nice too. Combine the warmth of a blanket with the functionality of a pant, and you get this classic midweight bottom. Don t let the cool fall or frigid winter keep you inside any longer. Minus33 Merino Wool Men's Kancamagus Midweight BottomMinus33-Merino-Wool-Kancamagus-Midweight

Minus33 Merino Wool Men's Kancamagus Midweight Bottom (706) FAQ.

I generally go through one pair of synthetic long johns every winter to get me through the bus waiting in portland. It's important that my base layer be warm, yet breathable so that i don't have to change when i get to work. . I usually have problems with bagginess in the butt and crotch area, which leads to bunching and horrible wedgies/riding up. I always just assumed that i was the wrong shape and this was the way it would always be. . I decided to try something different this year, since i've always had so much luck with my smartwool socks. Unfortunately, smartwool brand long johns were way out of my price range, but the minus33 were no more expensive than my usual synthetics. . These long johns are silky smooth, super comfortable, and snug at the waste, butt, and crotch, which reduces all of those wedgies and makes for a much warmer under layer. They breathe nicely and i don't get overly warm at work. . I can't recommend these enough. I will never go back to synthetics. . :edit:06/30/11. . After an entire winter with my minus 33 long johns, i'm even more impressed than when i first got them. My old synthetic brand used to get runs and tears in the knee well before spring arrived. They usually are about shred to pieces by may. Not only did these ones make it through the winter, they still look brand new and i have no trouble imagining them lasting another one or maybe even two seasons! these are a fabulous base layer at any price and yet, such a bargain :). . :edit:03/05/12. . Here i am, at the end of my second season with these and they're finally being torn to pieces. But i'm still very impressed. I've probably worn these everyday for six months, two years in a row. 365 days of constant use. For under $50, i can't imagine a better pair of long johns. Just get them :) -Notice from H. Maria, Hammersmith and Fulham

So comfortable! size fit true to the chart!

Minus33-merino-wool-men's-kancamagus-midweight-bottom-(706) set picture

- T. LewisI first heard about merino wool base layers through smartwool and figured that because of their industry name, they probably offered the best product. After reading a number of reviews on both brands i decided to go with the slightly cheaper and equally well rated minus 33 mid weight base layers. Honestly though, the main deciding factor is that minus 33 is one of the few, if not the only brands that offers such a product in medium tall. It seems like tall sizes start from large up, leaving people with my build in between two to awkward fitting sizes. I usually wear 30x34 pants (if i can find them), so the medium tall size is perfect for me. These work great for me for a wide range of activities including, daily cycle commuting year round, hiking, lounging, or just wearing underneath jeans on any given winter day. I was wearing under armor cold gear for the same purposes during the last few seasons and i think these are equally as warm if not more so once you start moving around. They're also superior in that they don't stink nearly as bad or as quickly as under armor or any other synthetic base layer and they're softer and more comfortable. I recommend picking up a pair here and there as they come on sale.

The softest, the best waist band, and a great fit. I'm deeply in love with these and have ordered a few pairs now that i wear regularly. So comfortable! . Edit-just receive a response back from minus33 regarding an inconsistency i found with the sizing between the lightweight and midweight pieces. The lightweight pieces i ordered seemed shorter than the kancamagus midweight. The designer has informed me that the pieces are cut the same, though the jersey knit fabric of the lightweight products stretches differently than the interlock knit fabric of the midweight fabric. That's why i can pull the kancamagus up real high to combat my hank hill waist/lack of arse, while the lightweight products seem to be shorter. So it looks like i'm a midweight man from here on out!

Minus33 Merino Wool Women's Ossipee Midweight Crew

I purchased this midweight minus33 xxl top and the matching minus33 mindweight xxl bottoms a while ago for to take on a week long elk hunting trip into the great alpine wilderness of eastern washington.

Minus33 Merino Wool Women's Ossipee Midweight Crew (804) FAQ.

These shirts are phenomenal. Excellent material, looks and fits great, high quality, perfect weight. I bought two, size 2x, and the matching bottom, and wore them for 8 days in iceland as a base layer, generally directly under a vest or rain coat. Especially great for hiking. They are the definition of high performance, and surprisingly never smelled after multiple uses (which i ve found to be a problem in the past). I felt a huge difference when wearing these compared to another brand i brought on this trip. I m sure these will last a long time but if i ever need to buy another, this is definitely my new go to! (btw, i m a huge nerd for high performance gear as i love to travel. I was in no way compensated for this review. ) -Notice from O. Sharon, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

I was hesitant to purchase a $65 layer, but i heard good things about merino wool and this product received good reviews so i tried it. I've worn it once and washed it once (hand wash cycle with cold water, line dry). It's a medium and a tad tight, but still comfortable. After i pulled the shirt from the washer, it reeked with a chemical type odor but after it tried it disappeared. Overall, so far so good.

- Y. FranklinI wear a size small shirt and this fits a little loose. So it s not tight. I think it s the perfect fit. It is soft and warm. I wore it three days in a row and never got smelly. I liked the radiant violet color too. It s a purple pink color. If it was really cold outside i would recommend the expedition though.

I love merino wool and was so happy to find some clothes that are in larger sizes. I ordered a 3xl and it fits great. Form fitting but not restrictive. I could wear another thin layer underneath and it will be a great layer under thicker tops. For reference i usually wear a 2x top or 18/20. I also purchased the minus33 franconia midweight bottom and am equally in love.

The F.A.Q. for minus33 merino wool men's chocorua midweight crew

I purchased this item with a matching bottom for use while scuba diving in a drysuit under the balmy waters of the puget sound. It was perfect. I had a thin baselayer underneath this and it kept me warm while being very well fitting, flexible, and light, even with a little sweat and condensation buildup in the drysuit. Considering water conducts heat away from a body about 4x faster than air, i recommend this for outdoor activities of any type, as the primary layer for temps between 0-10 degrees celsius or as a middle layer for colder temperatures.

I love this shirt, not only is it warm, it looks good, comes in different colors and doesn't attract lint like a dryer! i purchased the heavy weight yukon version which is way warmer but only comes in black and sucks lint to it like crazy! drives me nuts! it like pulls the down out of you coat! this one is great and doesn't do any of that, the color choice are also very large as well as the price range. I totally recommend it if you can afford it. Super thin, i cant believe its so warm being so thin and light but that technology for you. This is a real good buy compare to smartwool or under armor a bit cheaper. I have bough a few and do tell others about them, real soft too, no itchy wool any more yeah!

Best minus33 merino wool men's chocorua midweight crew (705) in review

Have purchased several of these in camo and black over 3 years for my husband, he is very satisfied with their versatility in our unpredictable climate requiring "layering" in the pacific northwest. Wish they were offered a bit more affordably priced, but still worth it for the quality. Caution: they are made of a natural fiber, which is apparently as desirable to our local rodents as it is to us. My husband left one of these wool camo shirts hanging with other hunting apparel in a covered shed to remain scent free for the upcoming bow season, and discovered large portions of it had been chewed and removed to use as nesting materials by our grateful squirrel population. Expensive lesson learned! . (ps. They do not touch petroleum based polys and polar fleece! )

O. Nancy, Schleswig-Holstein says

I started wearing these a couple of years ago, and have bought several more since. These shirts are awesome. They are warm, soft, easy to care for, and look good. They genuinely do seem to suck the sweat off my skin, and are otherwise at least fairly waterproof. Even after working up a pretty heavy sweat (most of which is wicked away by the shirt), the shirt still doesn't pick up any of the odor. And these easily go through the washer and dryer; although i have noticed they have a tendency to pick up some lint in the dryer. Also important for me: i'm a big guy, and many clothes just are not cut in the most flattering way. But these (size 4x) feel great and have gotten me a fair number of compliments.

N. Hannah, West Sussex

I love everything about this shirt except that merino wool attracts things due to the static so you may want to keep a lint brush handy. That is a small downside of the material, not the quality or manufature of this shirt which is excellent. It feels great against the skin and is warm. The great thing abour merino wool is that i feel comfortable in this shirt over a wide temperature range.

K. Nicole, Maryland says

Very impressed with the quality of this thermal top. I did however snag it on an exposed nailed and tor a one inch gap in it. User error. Sowed it up and good as new. Very warm in mid 50s by itself and rock solid as a base layer in colder temps. All i try to buy is merino wool because it keeps you warm when you need it but wont burn you up when the temps rise. The smell resistant wool is an awesome bonus too!

J. Alice, South Tyneside

Expensive but worth every penny. I've never owned any merino wool clothing before and i love how it feels. I bought it as a recommended base layer while hiking or camping in cold weather and can't wait for my next adventure. I bought the xxl and the fit is nearly perfect though i was worried about the initial wash/dry because it appeared to shrink. No problem, it flexes and relaxes after putting it on.

P. Florence, Wandsworth says

I picked this up as a base layer for cold weather cycling here in minnesota. It's comfortable, regulates heat well, moisture wicking, odor resistant, and all the other great qualities of merino wool. By itself, it's perfect for that awkward time between seasons when it's too warm for a soft shell, but too cold to go bare. I wear it on my commute over a t-shirt from about 36º-50ºf. After that, i throw a soft shell over it, and i can stay warm down to below 0ºf. The only down-side is the price, but if you're like me and will use it a lot, merino wool is always worth the extra investment. I'm 5'10", 150lbs, and i prefer form-fitting, non-baggy clothing. The medium fits a little loose-basically like in the photo-and there's extra room if you happen to fatten up.

A. Pearson, West Virginia

Amazing. It's so soft, has a cushion to it that's amazing. . I usually wear a large, it was way too baggy. A base layer should be snug and this wasn't. I sent it back for a medium (which i've never worn a medium before) and it fit perfectly. I'm 6'3 185 for reference. . Edit: oops. Wrote this review under the large, oh well. To clarify i currently have the medium-tall and they fit perfectly. Wish they had colors though, i have the large of the bottoms (kancamungus or something) not tall and it fits perfectly (in navy blue).

M. Alice, City of Bristol says

This thing is awesome. Kept me warm into the mid-fifties when sitting about and warm into the forties while backcountry hiking for three weeks in iceland. Didn't smell after those three weeks. Very comfy and a great baselayer. I am 6'4' and 190lbs and ordered a medium. It was a bit tight, which is what i want out of a baselayer. Pricey, but a good buy. Wool will insulate when wet too, so this buy is a no brainer. Will buy more minus 33 gear.

Q. Tracey, Surrey

I am 5'10", about 168-170 pounds. The medium did not fit right. The sleeves were too short. I ordered medium-tall size and it is prefect. I love it. I have quite few items from now not existing company ibex and this wardrobe is at least 30% cheaper for comparable garment with same or better quality. Highly recommend. I have also the ridge cuff beanie which i am wearing now every day. It's giving me the right amount of warming without overheating. Merino wool is the best for base layer.

G. Glenda, Kansas says

I have gotten a few of minus33's stuff this season, and at the price i got them for. They are a great product and a great value . So i would have to call that a best buy. I will continue to look at minus33 stuff in preference to thinking like patagonia, north. Face and smartwool - all brands i like, but that have gotten so expensive and cut. Back on features too.

K. Smith, Harrow

I love my minus 33 wool shirts. I started with a lightweight one (tico) for fall hunting and now have the tall sized medium weight. I used it for ice fishing last winter. I love it, it wicks the moisture away and doesn't stick after a few hours like the synthetic fabrics. I will wear it for a whole weekend while ice fishing. I am not sure i would want a heavy duty one, it might be too much warmth for me when sitting in the ice shanty. . The tall size is great, you can be assured it won't come untucked or slide up under my ice bibs.

I. Broyles, Lambeth says

I have several of these (xl tall - black) having worn them for 5 years now and still buy another one or two every fall and winter. Wearing them on a 6 2 210lb 35 waist & 45 chest athletic type frame and they fit me perfectly at the age of 70. They are not too long so that i can wear them out and are also long enough that i can tuck in and they don t ride out. . I ll wear these while working out in the yard or when hiking and sometimes during sleep at night when temps are down in the teens here in the northeast. This shirt dries so rapidly and is so comfortable even when sweating on a hike. It s cool and comfortable when damp from sweat and warm when the air is cold. . I tend to like it tucked in but with a white v-neck cotten xl-tall short sleeved shirt (jockey) worn on the outside (of my pants) and i like that look. And that s all i need under a down jacket or with a hooded sweatshirt and windbreaker (during a hike down in the 20 s). I m very happy with this purchase.

V. Irene, Wisconsin

This is a beautiful product. It's so nice finding the tall size. It's important that thermal underwear fit right, and this nails it. I'm 6'1/150 with long arms; so regular mediums are usually short at the wrists and waist. Not these :). . Because this is such a good product, it's expensive. Sometimes these can be had for around $65. Buy in at that price. I'd also recommend the kancamagus big and tall thermal pants to go with this. I am a size medium (big and tall) in both, and they go perfect together as a set.
