Garmin Forerunner 235 – Frost Blue Certified Ed (010 n3717 48) 4960

Review for forerunner certified

Price was $214.95. There only problem is if you don't rinse it under water and occasionally clean it with a brush, it will cause abrasive dermatitis under the watch band. . Burt i love all the features. I have occasionally had bluetooth connection issues but nothing like what others have written. There have already been two firm ware updates in there last 6 months so garmin seems committed to fixing issues and keeping the product running great. . Been wearing garmin running watches for 8 years and this is by far the most functional of them all. . There heart rate sensor isn't accurate enough to beer useful to me. I just don't think it's ready for prime time. If i could go back i would have saved the money and gotten the 230 without the on wrist heart rate monitor and would have been just as happy.

Preamble

This new garmin watch is definitely an upgrade for me from forerunner 10. Syncs instantly as long as you have connect app open and bluetooth enabled. . Very light and perfect size for my small wrist (see photo) the band is great especially when sweaty, it doesn't get sticky. Fast charge and the battery last a long time. . I like the notification feature of text for me since i don't need to look at my phone. I love how my friends can text me to say wtg on my running. . I've used this outdoor trail running and running on my treadmill, pretty accurate on the pace and distance. Garmin Forerunner 235 - Frost Blue Certified Ed Review (010 n3717 48)

I got this watch for my first spartan race and it s supassed all expectations. I m a fire fighter and needed a sport watch that could stay on my wrist and handle the heat , literally. This watch is very tough and basic which is what i like about it. Extremely comfortable sport band for your wrist and the watch itself is pretty low profile and very light. The connect app goes above and beyond as far as tracking all your activities, and the watch monitors heart rate 24/7, does sleep cycles, and tracks all your steps and you can put in how many minutes of hard workouts you want to achieve. Another plus is that it automatically links up with strava when you finish an activity, which for me was a huge plus. The charge on the battery lasts for days too. All in all it has so far passed all my expectations in all categories. Oh and the water proofing is great, i can shower with it, and it survived a lot of mud and sand in my spartan super race. If you re looking for a tough watch that can hold up and do it all then this is the one! -F. Lynette

First things first, this thing is a garbage smart watch. If you are buying it on those merits, turn back now while you can. . However, as a fitness running watch, this thing is absolutely awesome. I switched to start using this from an apple watch namely bc i realized the real value that i personally wanted was for running and fitness. Here are the three key strengths that made me switch from apple watch:. . 1. Always on screen with always current data - raising your wrist and waiting for screen to turn on and load data fields while running is not fun. The garmin is always ready for me to glance at my current pace or any data field. Changed the precision and intensity of my training. . 2. Battery life with gps and built in heart rate- i run about 18-25 miles and cycle about 6 hours per week. I can do all of that 1-2 charges of my garmin watch. Insane. By comparison, my apple watch would not be able to handle any runs longer than 10 miles, and had to be charged daily or twice daily depending on my fitness activities. . 3. Data export - apple watch's native fitness app is the most performant and quick to use, but the data is locked away. I use strava, so it was really important to me that this device could directly share to my various fitness apps and it does this in stride. Everything syncs up great and i have no complaints. . So what about those "smart watch features" that this garmin has? . Like i said above, as a smart watch, the garmin loses miserably to the competition. However, it has just enough functionality where you don't feel the need to switch watches to a more robust smartwatch during the day. I thought that i would use my apple watch during normal day, and switch to garmin for sports, but the ability to view push notifications, calls, and texts on my garmin is just barely enough to not need to do that. . So that's my review. If you can relate and this helped your decision, great!

When i received it came in a garmin refurbished box with instructions, quick start manual, and warranty form and information along with a brand new charger cord along with the watch in perfect condition without any scratch, not a speck of dust and watch band that was also spotless and showed no signs of wear."

The F.A.Q. for garmin forerunner 235 - frost blue certified ed

I have worn this watch now for 24 hours and i have to admit i really like it. I ordered a refurbished watch for around $200 and at that price this watch is amazing. Everything works fine. It was not charged out of the box so i had to patiently wait an hour or so before i could turn it on. Once on i quickly set it up and customized it to my liking. It is a little tricky to navigate but luckily i had watched a few youtube videos about the watch prior to receiving it. This watch integrates nicely with the apple watch and health app. Garmin connect is also very nice software. I do not think this watch tracks steps climbed so that will not record into your health app. If i am wrong about this someone please let me know! i swam with the watch and it worked perfectly. It also did a great job of tracking and analyzing my sleep. My wife recently purchased an apple watch 2. There are pros and cons to both. I love that the battery life lasts a long time which is why i chose this over apple. I am sure the next apple watch will knock out the competition but for now i think this is the best option. Especially for the refurbished price of $200

Lightweight watch that works great for running and other activities. I run about 25 miles/week and strength train 3-4 times/week. I've had my watch for 5 months now and the only downside to it is using the clunky garmin app on your phone. This watch works great for indoor/outdoor running, biking and *other* activities but did not work well at the indoor pool at the ymca(this watch is not made for swimming but is water resistant up to 50 meters). The continuous hr monitor works very well and viewing my sleep patterns has been eye opening. The display is beautiful and can be customized to show pics or anything else. I love the race time, vo2 max, and recovery time predictors. You can view text messages but not respond, weather, daily steps, heart rate and other notifications on the watch as well as adjust music volume from a separate blu tooth device(the watch doesn't store music). Overall the watch is comfortable, looks good, is customizable, and has a good array of features. I put a glass screen protector on mine and it has held up well especially for how lightweight it is. I'm pretty sure my friends are tired about hearing how much i enjoy this watch at this point but i truly think its a great watch.

Best garmin forerunner 235 - frost blue certified ed (010 n3717 48) in review

This is the third garmin watch i've owned after the past 5 years - not because they keep breaking, i just keep upgrading. I started with the forerunner 10, moved to the 15, and am now using the 235. . After all of the positive reviews, and wanting a device that would deliver notifications to my watch for easy reading, i decided on this one (over the vivoactive) since it's designed for runners and has testimonials of high durability (is truly waterproof, provides relevant running stats, etc. ). . Things that make this upgrade worth it:. -very fast gps signal location. -provides time for fastest mile, even if that was between miles, i. E. Mile 1. 3-2. 3. -stays connected to phone, uploads data automatically and quickly. -lots of great, free watch faces to choose from. -very long battery life (lasts a week, even with about 4 runs logged). . The only cons i've had:. . -some of the watch faces mess the device up - i started with one that had tons of data on the main screen and, after the watch completely froze to the point of being unusable (can't restart, no buttons work, etc), i narrowed the culprit down to being the watch face. After switching to a different one, i've had no problems. . -i don't like wearing it to bed, so i turn it off at the end of the day. This seems to throw off the bt connection and sometimes i have to re-add the device. I'd say this is typical for bt devices, however. . As usual, garmin packs a ton of high-quality, low-maintenance functionality into a great product once again. To me, they are the gold standard for fitness devices.

Hardware: 3 stars. Running: 5 stars. Heart rate accuracy: 4. 5 stars (cardio), 3. 5 stars (interval/weight training). App functionality: 3. 5 stars. . Overall thoughts. I've been around the block on fitness gear, specifically ones with optical heart rate monitors. After 6 months of owning the garmin 235, here are my thoughts, along with a comparison to the other items i've owned (fitbit surge & mio fuse):. . Hardware: the watch is lightweight, the band provides good air penetration (ie less likely to cause wrist rash), and while the watch face itself is pretty large, even as a female i didn't find it unweildy for everyday wear. It is a bit casual looking to wear everyday at the office, but i do anyway to get the activity tracking benefits. The main issue i've experienced is that the plastic house (which makes it so lightweight) means that the watch face is very easy to scratch. After 6 months of pretty "normal" wear (ie daily office plus workouts a few times a week), i have 3 pretty large, obvious scratches on the watch face. . Running: for people who primarily run for exercise, this watch is great. Gps functionality, pretty quick signal lock-on, solid accuracy. It also has a cycle mode plus swim mode (it's water resistant), which are nice touches. I do wish it had more gym features - all other exercise gets lumped into an "other" setting, so it's hard to go back and know what was weights, yoga, elliptical, etc unless you manually go into the app and rename each session (which is enough of a pain that i never do). . Heart rate accuracy: for activities where your wrist isn't bending much (running, elliptical, swimming), the accuracy on the ohrm is quite good. I occasionally find a lag is my arm is really sweaty, but it does a solid enough job that the information is useful and usually 93-96% accurate to a chest strap. For exercise when your wrist/arm are frequently bending, accuracy gets way spottier - it interval training where you're up/down on the floor for pushups, weights, etc. Accuracy drops to more like 70-80% in my experience. Enough to be kind of useful (ie to see how high heart rate got in the session) but not to really get any insight about how heartrate performed during the session as it often drops tracking or lags measurement. I do enough interval training that this is pretty annoying. I plan to wait another 6 months or so to see if garmin improves their ohrm algorithms, and to see what other products hit the market, and reassess. The gold standard in my experience for interval training ohrm accuracy so far has been the mio fuse. (mio actually is the company that created ohrm). . App functionality: over the last 6 months, the app has improved significantly in terms of keeping a correct bluetooth connection and being able to sync (initially i had consistent issues with this). The app itself certainly works fine - you can see charts of heart rate, mapped runs, etc - but the overall app experience definitely goes to fitbit here for ease of use, ability to connect with other users, and visual. . Comparison to mio fuse. The mio sings in ohrm accuracy. Even during high intensity interval training, crossfit wods, weightlifting, it was nearly dead on accurate. This is no small thing for someone (like me) who really did want to monitor heart rate during workouts. The mio fuse also does basic activity tracking, ie steps, but no altimiter for stairs and no gps. Ultimately it was the no gps that pushed me to upgrade to the garmin 235 when it came out. The main downside is the app. It has bare bones functionality, if that. I often had connection issues with the bluetooth, app crashes, and minimal available information from the app interface. (note: there is a mio alpha which uses the same great ohrm technology and does include gps, but it does not have any daily fitness tracking and is a more focused sports/running watch. And of course, the same mio app issues). . Comparison to fitbit surge. I began with a fitbit surge 18 months ago, and while the app functionality is heads and shoulders above any competitors i've tried (including garmin), the ohr accuracy was awful unless you could somehow exercise a) without sweating and b) while keeping your wrist nearly motionless. This made the ohrm basically useless unless you were a non-sweaty person who only ran for exercise, no weights or interval training. (as an example, during crossfit sessions the surge would regularly read in the 80s while my actual heart rate was in the 160s). The band also irritated my skin - i ended up having to take it off at night to avoid a wrist rash, which is too bad since the sleep tracking accuracy was actually the best with this device in my experience.

As someone else mentioned, make sure you are buying this watch for the right reasons! i have been a dedicated fitbit user for the past 3 years. I have had the charge hr, the surge and the blaze. I was a runner through the charge and surge (gps) but then had a knee injury and became a gym rat through the blaze time period. My knee has been doing better and so i am pleased to say that i am back to running! i used the garmin and fitbit blaze together through various days and workouts to compare them. I hope this review helps someone switching from a blaze/surge to a garmin 235. . I love having an activity tracker but i also love having a gps running watch. I had the surge but it was so ugly, i got rid of it. So why did i need to move on from the blaze? it is advertised as being able to connect to your phone for gps. This was an epic fail for me and although fitbit customer service was awesome and replaced it under warranty, the new unit still did not work on gps. It had a lot of bluetooth problems including not connecting often so that i could access music controls. It also was not catching my heart rate correctly during high cardio and peak heart rate. . Here are my thoughts on the garmin:. -the gps is awesome! not once have i had a single issue with the gps. I ran with the blaze and garmin yesterday. The blaze (connected to gps for a brief moment before it lost connection) gave me 2. 35 miles while the garmin gave me 2. 2. I do like that the blaze tells you how many steps you take on your run while the garmin does not. . -the music controls work well and always connect. This was very important to me and if the garmin did not have this option, i would not have bought it. I do wish it showed the track name like the blaze did though. . -i like that you can customize your garmin, but it can take some practice before you can figure out how to do that. It's also much easier to download apps, widgets and watch faces connected to your computer than to your smart phone. I got tons of error messages when trying to do it on my phone. Also like the fitness pal connection. . -heart rate seems pretty spot on. I have read lots of reviews here that say this product has a bad hrm, but i have found that to be untrue. Since i have had many fitbits with this feature and experience with polar heart rate straps (they cut my skin so i had to stop using them), i believe that the heart rate monitor is pretty reliable. It does not show the heart beat moving like the blaze does, but that's minor and it does take a minute to update. It did catch my peak heart rate where the blaze had trouble. It showed my peak at 175 which is maybe 3-4 beats too high but much closer than my blaze which said 164. . -as for steps. This is where i am not sure of the reliability. I wore it with the blaze yesterday and the blaze gave me 12, 499 while the garmin gave me 10, 823. On friday, my work schedule is such that i don't usually get very many steps and the garmin gave me 10, 948 steps, so i became suspicious leading to me wearing both monitors together on saturday. I am going to guess that the correct number is somewhere in between the two watches. Also, the garmin does not let you know when you have reached your goal and that feature on the blaze was kind of cute. Vo2 max is cool but probably not very accurate. So is the recovery hours suggestion. . -love the weather and sunrise/sunset view. This helps me not need to look the info up on my phone. . -this is a very attractive looking watch. I hate that fitbit is stuck on the square watch face look and i will not go back to fitbit until they try a round watch face that can pass for a regular watch like this one can! i have a very small wrist (around 5. 5") and this strap is comically long on me. I wish they made small watch band sizes for women like me. But nothing is as comical looking as the hideous surge was! . . Here is where i agree with the reviewer about making sure that you are buying this watch for the right reasons! the bad parts. I am a gear head and very good with gadgets. So i can only imagine being someone who is not. -on the first night i had my garmin, i was 100% sure i was going to return it because the set up process was such a pain in the butt. The app absolutely sucks. If garmin could hire a fitbit software engineer to sort out their ios app, i would be a happy camper. I got so many error messages and i still cannot figure out how to use the app very easily. That's where fitbit has one up on garmin. Information you want at your fingertips are easy to find, but on the garmin, it often takes me a few minutes to find the info i want. I wish i could have all the data from the garmin with the fitbit app. . -the menus on the watch are very difficult to figure out. If you asked me right now how to get to my stopwatch feature, i could not tell you how and i would have to google it. I also had to google various other steps to access other things on the watch. . -i cannot tell when my garmin is actually charging. I don't see any icon or any indicator that it is charging and i have to just come back in a few minutes to see if the percentage has changed. . -battery life. Well, needless to say it doesn't last very long. I charged it fully on wednesday and then used it only during the day (turning it off at night) and it is sunday now. It has 31% battery left. So that's around 48 hours so far with probably another 8 before i need to charge it again. I read some users saying that the battery life gets better as time goes on so we will see. . -sometimes i wonder if the hrm is working at all. My blaze was running/flashing at all times. Just now, i took my garmin off and it is not flashing at all. It takes about a minute or so before it turns back on. But when it is working, it's reliable. . So all in all, be sure you are buying this for the right reasons. Don't expect it to be a gimmicky/cute activity tracker like a fitbit. If you are looking for a good gps running watch with some maybe reliable activity tracking, this is the watch for you. I was very sad to leave fitbit and i will probably go back if they ever come out with a surge 2 that is not square (hate that look) so i can use their awesome app and do challenges with my friends and coworkers.

Z. Shawna, District of Columbia says

Update (7/29/17): the battery life is seriously impressive. I can get through about 6. 5 days with 35 miles of gps running (7:30/mile or faster) with 24x7 activity and heart rate tracking. . Edit (7/11/17): received a replacement device. The battery is much better. I lose about 1% every 4-6 hours with heart rate monitoring on, activity tracking off and smart notifications on. . Original review:. Features are great as noted by other reviews. The watch is very light and looks good on the wrist for being a gps watch. I may have a received a dud as i could not get the battery to last more than 10 hours no matter how hard i tried. I tried turning off activity tracking and heart rate which got me to about 10 hours. I tried turning the watch off entirely (before i went to bed); it was turned off with about 85% battery, 8 hours later it had 4% left. . I returned the watch for a replacement so we'll see if the second one is any better.

This is the best running/fitness watch i ve tried. My fitbit surge kept breaking (went through 3 in 5 months). The tom tom didn t quite do everything i wanted it to, including real time heart rate monitoring, and also the tomtom app was lacking information. This garmin watch is extremely lightweight (i can t even tell it s there most of the time), the battery lasts a long time (5+ days every running with gps daily), and it has all kinds of great functions i never knew i wanted. It tracks heart rate, plus gives you a 4 hour graph of hr, resting heart rate (not very accurate), vo2 max, step cadence and more. Only complaint is that he exercise functions only include: outdoor run, indoor run, bike, swim and other. So i have to use other when i use the elliptical, stair master, or strength training/weights. It also does not track steps when your arm isn t swinging, so even though the gps shows i walked 3 miles while pushing the stroller, it doesn t add to my step count (a lot of fitness trackers have this problem, i just figured if gps was on, it would count steps as well).

I. Anonymous, Gloucestershire says

I have only used this as a daily watch to show phone notifications, count steps, and mostly for tracking my runs and sleep. It's great to have so much information on your wrist during a run to see pace, finish time, heart rate, zone, and so much more. You can set it to do specific workouts for interval training which is extremely handy so you can just do your workout without having to constantly look to see how long or far you've gone. I can focus on my workout and push harder. It's extremely lightweight and comfortable. I forget i'm even wearing it. The battery life isn't amazing, but it's good enough. I get on average 5 days between charging and i think it still have 15-20% battery left. It looks great whether wearing casual or business dress. I shopped around for more and less expensive options, and so glad i went with this watch for all the benefits it provides. If i lost or broke it, i would buy it again without hesitation!

Overall my initial impressions is that the forerunner 235 has the potential to be a decent runners watch. And i would probably hope to give it an additional star maybe two, if garmin international can sort out why it is somewhat incompatible to apple's iphone and the ios system. Unfortunately, both the weather and calendar widget features are not working as a result. Apparently, garmin is now fully aware of this issue and has its software engineers working on it. Since i have had a previous garmin forerunner for quite a few years that was real decent, i am going to give them a few days prior to consider returning for a refund via online store. The other aspect i am not ecstatic about is that the screen is a bit on the dim side, but i believe i can learn to live with it if i do decide to keep the watch. At the moment a bit disappointed to say the least, we will see. . Oct 13, 2016 update: today garmin's connect mobile version 3. 11 sorted out the firmware in my forerunner 235 and the weather and. Calendar widgets are working fine. As well that the garmin connect app now displays additional information that i hadn't noticed before. I am now a much happier camper as i start to invest more time to figure out further what this watch has to offer and to further customize it with additional widgets. I have gone ahead to upgrade my rating to 4 stars, as i will no longer consider returning this 235 to instead get an apple series 2 watch due the initial compatibility issues i was having with my iphone 6 plus. I may update this review one more time in a couple of weeks, and would not be surprised in giving it 5 stars once i figure a few more features out, and customize it closer to meet my needs as a runner.

Z. Julie, Lorraine says

I ve had the fr235 for a whole week and here s more details. -appearance . The fr235 is extremely lightweight. You d find it hard to believe that the guys at garmin managed to squeeze in vibration motor, accelerometer, gps + glonass, audio and a decent rechargeable battery, all sealed to 5atm water resistance. The charging cable is proprietary and features a clamp design that ends off with a usb end. I love the big display that really brings out the beauty in the custom faces you can find on garmin connect iq. The strap is exchangeable and i was surprised to learn that there s actually a black/volt nike exclusive version on top of the marsala, black gray, frost green. The slightly stretchy strap is full of ventilation and fitting holes. What i particularly like is that the fr235 looks good enough to be worn during and outside training. With a brightly coloured strap, it could even look like a trendy time piece that doesn t scream fitness tracker! . -hr recording-. I compared the hr data to that from a polar h7 bluetooth smart hrm and the comparison is shown in the attached pictures. The 2 hr graphs are not identical as you can see the numerous peaks in the hr graph of the fr235. That being said, i thought the fr235 gave a pretty good estimate in smart recording mode; meaning the hr/gps data is not recorded every second, it can range from once per second to once every 6 seconds thereabouts. The eventual file size is smaller and usually the recorded data is sufficient for the average user. When the recording mode was switched to every second, the fr 235 performed superbly. While the data is not quite that of the polar h7, it s getting really close. I understand there are users out there who are not getting the same response from the fr235 that i am. Optical heart rate sensors are tricky and dependant on many factors. I have to stress that i m speaking from personal usage as an individual. -training . There are 4 activity profiles. 1. Run. 2. Run indoors. 3. Cycle. 4. Others. You can t remove any of them though you can hide them if it s not used much. The cool thing about the fr235 is that all 4 modes can be individually customised. For example for outdoor runs, i would like the gps function to be available but all smart notifications to be turned off. But for indoors runs on a treadmill, i would like the gps function to be turned off and all forms of smart notifications enabled. So the fr235 allows you to set your preferences for all 4 activity profiles. Besides the activity profiles, there s also training tools you can tap on such as:. 1. Training calendar. 2. Intervals. 3. My workouts. 4. Finishing time. Features like training calendar and my workouts require that you log into garmin connect web and do some planning. The fr 235 allows the user to set interval distance, duration and time right from the watch device. As for finishing time, you just need to set a distance and go about your run while the fr235 will display roughly how fast you can complete the distance based on the current pace. The screen during activity tracking can be set to a total of 5 screens of which 2 can be further split into 4 data fields each. So in total you re getting 4+4+1 (heart rate) +1 (hr zone gauge)+1 (clock) 11 stats to view during tracked activities. And these can be set differently for every activity profile. -smart notifications . The fr235 allows you to expand and read smart notifications or set the mode of alert, be it audio, vibration or both. -physiological stats . After a run of more than 10 minutes, the fr235 will give you a vo2 max estimation. The recovering advisor will also list the number of hours you need to rest before the next hard workout. The data is analysed by first beat, a finnish company that also provides similar service to samsung, garmin, suunto, sony and many more. There s also a predicted finishing time for 5k, 10k, half and full marathon based on your performance in tracked 10 minutes. -all day activity tracker . The fr235 tracks steps, distance, calories burned, sleep, all day hr and intensity minutes but it doesn t track number of stairs climbed due to the lack of a barometer. It is also compatible with 3rd. If you ve been sedentary for too long, the fr235 will alert you through an audio beep or buzz that it s time to get up and move. . -others . There are a lot of avenues for customisation and if you re willing to invest the time, you can really tweak the fr235 to your personal preference. I was able to set alerts during a tracked activity session to buzz when i go beyond a certain hr. Also i set the autopause function to kick in when i slow below 10km/hr; could be waiting for the traffic lights and so on. The fr235 also connects to ant+ foot pod , heart rate monitor and garmin s virb action cameras. If you re looking for chest strap accurate hr readings, then opt for the fr230 and buy a chest strap. Otherwisethe fr235 is a serious contender on anyone s list of gps fitness watch to consider. Pros:. 24/7 fitness tracker. Tracks steps, distance, calories, sleep. Measure all day heart rate and heart rate during tracked activity sessions. Gps+glonass enabled with smart or per second tracking. Vibration and audio enabled for smart notifications, alarms, move alerts. Expand and read full messages on fr 235 display. Pick up phone calls only. Heavily customisable. Garmin connect iq compatible for apps and watch face downloads. Vo2 max score, race time predictor, recovery advisor. Automatic laps for 1km/1 mile or customised. Auto pause during tracked runs. Interval run features. Water resistant to 5 atm. Big screen that is not touch enabled. Sunlight readable screen with back light. Connect iq compatible. Reads lap number and time from garmin connect mobile app from connected smart phone. Shows weather and calender events from smart phone. Water resistant to 5 atm. Cons. Navigation on the fr235 takes getting used to. No virtual pacer feature. . -updated 28th jan 2016-. Well i had the watch for a while now. It's still great and it's rare i keep a fitness tracking device for such an extended period of time. One thing that bothers me is the bluetooth connection especially after firmware updates. I found myself having to switch off and on the fr235 again when the bt connection runs into difficulty.

Everyday i fall more in love with this watch! it helps me stay competitive with myself instead of comparing with others. I love setting goals for my intensity minutes! makes me motivated to get that extra workout in. Gps works really well. I love being able to set intervals and have the watch vibrate when i've reached a certain mileage or time, its great to not have to pull my phone out of my running belt to check. Everyday i feel like i learn a new feature about this watch and am excited to learn more! . . Only bad is that i have really small wrists so the face does look quite large, but i don't mind too much. It's crazy how plastic/lightweight it feels, almost like it is cheap or could break easily, but it is holding up really nice and works perfectly so far!

I previously used the fr 15 and wanted to upgrade, i chose the 235 because i liked the idea of having the built in hr monitor as well as the sleep tracking. I find this watch as a good watch, but it has some quirks that i don't really care for when running. I had to turn off the auto pause because it was too sensitive and sometimes not sensitive enough. When i actually had to pause at a stop light, it would not auto pause, but when i actually stopped my watch and turned it back on and started running it would auto pause from 10 seconds to 40 seconds. Missing a good portion of my run. When wearing the watch day to day, i do not feel the watch is big or bulky, but when running with it, i sweat and it slides down my wrist. I tried wearing it tighter, but i still get the same results. I also noticed the step counter is off, it will yell at me to "move" while i am walking or as i just sit down after a short walk. So that shows me that it is not counting all the steps i actually walk. The 15 was more accurate when it came to counting steps. Overall, the watch is still amazing i just don't like some of the things it has, i should have perhaps tried a fr 25.

As a runner, cyclist, and someone at work who needs an always on display i really enjoy the 235. Unfortunately there is a a big with an update that crashed the heart rate sensor but garmin was very prompt in sending me a replacement watch. I have had two apple watches, a garmin vivoactive, pebble, and fitbit surge. For me the 235 is the best especially with the recent price drop. It performs smart watch notifications well, nice step counter, and the connnect app may not be as simple and elegant as fitbit but it is complete, well thought out and offers a lot of data. I love how the 235 is water resistant so i can get notifications when i don't have access to my iphone. The running and cycling metrics are awesome including calculating vo2 max. See dc rainmaker's thorough review for a complete review.

Since i bought it, i run with it literally every run (previously had a simple sigma watch with a heart-rate monitor - often didn't bother to take it). This watch motivates me to always wear it, and also strap the chest belt. In part because the built-in wrist monitor is pretty much useless. . The screen is great - some sort of colorful "e-ink" - never seen anything like this before. Works great with outside light. Backlight is dim, but you rarely use it and when you do, it's enough. . The battery is good for 3 runs, each about 1-1. 5 hours, on highest gps settings. Between runs i keep it on the shelf, so not much energy is spent. Charges very quickly (like maybe 20 min). . Lightweight with soft wristband - optimal for sports. A lot of thought went into the interface, so it's very easy to use. . Garmin connect site is also awesome - you can upload your data and it shows you all sorts of statistics and maps of your runs. . You can also download different watch faces, which is neat. Heck, you can even download tetris :)

Updated 12/31/2015: i purchased the new garmin forerunner 235 at the 2015 route 66 marathon expo over a month ago. So far i am very impressed with this device, although there are certainly some issues (more on those later). But, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. First off, to give you an idea of how i plan to use this watch, i run approximately 30-50 miles a week and run about 3-6 marathons/year, along with the occasional half marathon should the mood strike. I am also a casual cyclist, which serves as one of my cross training workouts. Here are some of my observations. . First impressions . . The forerunner 235 (fr235) is very light, weighing in at only 1. 5 oz and has a wrist band made of a soft, flexible, supple rubber material. I am immediately struck by how comfortable the watch feels on my wrist. Easily this watch is more comfortable than other garmin watches i am familiar with, such as the forerunner 10, forerunner 910xt, forerunner 920xt, and forerunner 305. The fr235 proved itself worthy indeed during my last marathon, staying nice and comfy and snug on my wrist throughout. . Ideal for runners . . The fr235 is a mid-range watch targeted primarily for runners, replacing the forerunner 225 model. This watch easily has all the features i need and then some. As to the accuracy of the heart rate (hr) monitor, it works well - at times. More on this later. Do realize that wrist-based optical hr monitors are still relatively new, technically speaking, and continue to face challenges. So, if your major reason for getting the fr235 is for its hr functions, be aware that it is not perfect. . Below is a non-exhaustive list of the features i find useful in this watch, many of which are an improvement from the previous model, the forerunner 225:. . Hardware . . Battery life up to 11 hours for training; 9 days for watch + activity tracking + notifications + heart rate functions. . Water resistant to a depth of 50 meters (164 ft. Or 5 atm). . Built-in wrist-based optical heart rate sensor (3 leds + optical sensor configuration). . Glonass and gps signal receiver; using both means faster signal acquisition and improved accuracy and coverage. This is especially useful while running near many large buildings in an urban environment. Just be aware that using both gps and glonass reduces battery life from 11 to 9 hours during training. Using only the gps, which is what i do, is perfectly fine and i noticed that this watch acquires the gps signal very quickly, accurately, and reliably. . Software . . Bluetooth connected features (via pairing with a smartphone) include phone notifications, social media interactions, livetrack (allows others to follow your race in real time), and locate lost smartphone capability. . Connect iq support, which means you can download custom watch faces, widgets, data fields, and apps to the watch. There are lots of options to choose from to make your watch unique to your tastes and needs. I especially like the weather widget! . . Capable of every second data recording, which means that data points are captured every second, resulting in a highly detailed record of your run. This feature is important for you data types who like to perform running analytics and such. The previous model (forerunner 225) did not have this capability; it only had smart data recording, which only captured data points associated with a change in direction, pace, or heart rate. This reduces the file size for the run, but at the cost of not having a detailed analysis of your run. . Virb control, which allows you to control your virb action camera. I have not tried this feature as i don t have one of these cameras. . Physiological/activity tracking . . Running dynamics data provided (via garmin connect) such as average stride length, average run cadence, and max run cadence. . Recovery advisor, which displays how much time off you need before you are fully recovered and ready for the next workout. So far, i am unsure of how accurate this is. After running a marathon, the recovery advisor showed i needed around 60 hours, which seems a bit low to me. However, perhaps this is because the device requires more running data in order to learn more about my running performance and possibly provide better estimates. Other physiological measurements captured include vo2 max estimation and race time prediction. . Activity tracking feature records step count, step goal, distance traveled, and calories burned for each day. There is also move alert, which when sitting for prolonged periods of time will trigger an alert to remind you to move. . Custom data screens; the activity screens available:. Screen 1 - custom data (up to four data fields). Screen 2 - custom data (up to four data fields). Screen 3 - heart rate (optional). Screen 4 - heart rate zone gauge (optional). Screen 5 - clock (optional). . Sleep tracking feature monitors movement during sleep. Data captured include total hours of sleep, time spent in each level of sleep (deep, light, awake) based on movement detected by the device. Note that you need to use garmin connect (via website account or mobile application) to view these statistics. . Built-in optical heart rate sensor can measure heart rate 24/7. The sampling rate is determined by activity; while you are running the sampling rate is every second, the industry standard. While at rest, it seems that the sampling depends on when you move, or when you manually check your hr by navigating to the hr screen. I suspect this is done as a way of extending battery life. . Training indoors feature uses the device accelerometer to capture speed and distance data. I haven't tried this yet, but with the colder weather lately i may finally try this out on the dreaded gym dreadmill (aka treadmill). . Supports cycling mode. Data captured includes bike speed and cadence (with optional cadence accessory). Haven't tested this yet. . Usability . . Large display (44% larger than the previous model, the forerunner 225). The display is plastic, and so far it appears to be resistant to scratching from the usual activities. I have not yet banged it on the edge of a wall or table, so that would be the real test when that should happen. . A total of five buttons is located around the watch face, and no touch screen. The display has great resolution and capable of showing color graphics. . Alerts include vibration, sound, and visual. You can also play audio alerts during your run when used with your smartphone. Audio alerts include lap number, lap time, lap pace, lap speed, and heart rate data. During an alert the garmin connect app on the smartphone will play the audio announcement while muting whatever music you are playing on your smartphone. . The wrist turn backlight setting can be used to turn on the backlight with a turn of the wrist toward you. I finally had a chance to use this during a recent nighttime run, and it was really nice not having to push the backlight button to see my watch. Also, i noticed that the backlight is not as bright as say, the forerunner 920xt, but it is still sufficient! . . Concerns, bugs, odd behaviors and such . . The hr function of this watch is not stellar, but it does get the job done somewhat. First off, as i mentioned earlier, wrist-based hr sensor technology is not quite there yet. I have seen the fr235 give false hr readings that were greatly elevated. While sitting at my desk i have seen hr readings spike from a resting hr of 50 to 140 in just a few seconds, and then return back to resting hr all the while i am staring at my fr235 in disbelief, not moving an inch. Also, the hr data that is captured is not smooth; rather, it is erratic at times with "jumps" in hr values over time. You can see this when looking at the hr bar graph which displays data over the last four hours. Having said all of this, i am not bothered by this as the hr monitor function of the fr235 is not the main reason i chose this device; instead it was a "nice" to have function. Just understand that this technology is far from perfect and you will be fine. . Bluetooth connected features are not reliable, and i can't seem to find a pattern as to how they sometimes work and other times not so much. Also, when launching the connect garmin app on my phone a connection "should" be established to the fr235 so that data can be downloaded. This does not reliably work, so i would have to manually establish a connection and even this doesn't always work. What does work when this issue arises is to power the fr235 off and then back on, then re-try the app. Hopefully a software fix from garmin will resolve this issue, but as any garmin can attest don't hold your breath for this to some rapidly! . . When i wear the watch on my left wrist, for some reason i occasionally hit the start/stop timer button. Also, the fr235 lets out a quiet "squeak" when i sometimes move my wrist in a certain way. I suspect it has to do with the particular qualities of the materials where the strap and watch make connection. . Final thoughts . . Overall, still an advanced running watch with a lot of cool useful features. I would happily recommend the forerunner 235 to any serious runner looking to improve their ability. As i have more experience with the watch, i will update this review accordingly. . Last updated 2015-12-31
